Hi there everybody. I'm new here to the forum but not new to bikes. I'm in the process of buying an 81 XS650 and waiting for the title to come in. This bike is going to be my project now because my shovelhead softail project is just too damn expensive to finish now. I plan on building a wide tire XS so I have a couple questions.

1. I have a set of new 18x5.5 and 21x2.15 wire wheels and 180/55zr18 and 90-21 tires I was going to use on the softail. The back wheel is for a softail and the front is a wide glide I believe. The front hub width was around 6.75. The wheel bearing ID is 3/4" front and back and I Believe the XS axle is at 20mm. I would like to use a G&L hardtail on the bike.

Will the wide glide front wheel fit between the stock XS forks? And Would I just use an aftermarket Harley axle for the rear?

2. I was planning on running the Gary Poh offset kit also. Can someone recommend a 520 sprocket that will fit a Harley wheel?

Thanks in advance for the help.

You will need the following things:

1. A ruler
2. Research

I suggest the search function to begin with.

Thanks for the help. I was under the impression that the Gary Poh kit used a 520 chain. That sprocket should work great for me. And I have been searching and doing research. I'd just go measure the XS forks but the bike isn't here. I cant find the width between the fork tubes.

Here is one done with 21 in front and 18/5.5 on back
Harley front end on this bike and all harley on back

Wide glide won't work. Narrow glide will with some axle modification and spacers. I'm going with a wargasser spool.

You will want a 530 rear sprocket....my offset sprocket are all 530..(although i have made some 520's)
the standard for the harley and xs65 is 530..

Sprocket Specialties in California makes some fine rear sprockets in just about and tooth size...(i would recomend a 34t or 35t max with my 18t front..

I hope that helps

thanks

Gary

That's what the ruler is for.
Get the wheel mounted and centered. Measure how much the front sprocket need to move to line up with rear. Order the parts that fit the specs.

I never had to use a spacer on the front unless you are going to a 200 tire. There is plenty of room to change the wheel spacers on both side to get the chain and wheels lined up correct. Both of these bikes in picture are HARLEY rear wheel . White frame bike is 18"x4 rim with tire and drop seat bike is FAT SPOKE 5.5 wide rim and tire. I think that was 160. If you are going bigger than a 180 on a 4' or 5" rim then I would go buy the good 200 kit that moves the left cover out but you got to make sure your frame can handle that. There are company's like SPROCKET SPECIALIST that do make offset sprockets for front I use them on drag bikes but you can only go out 1/4 inch without doing some mods on sprocket cover.

I didn't mention sprocket spacers because there is no room to space the front sprocket. You would have to get an offset sprocket that has the offset you are looking for.
