Basically the engine is classed as a 447 type. The engine was the same from 74-83. the gearbox had a change mid way through 77. The shaft got a different profile and the gears matched. The clusters can be mismatched as the profile of the gears didn't change

Hi thanks for all the responses I have just done my tensioner and tappets when inspecting the plugs seemed to be running rich black and sooty bike runs nice I am a little dubious to mess with the carbs at the moment thinking of adjusting the mixture but still trying to find out which model of carbs they are they have this wriiten on them MIKUNI KOGYO but not able to find any serial numbers.looked in my manual and it says there is a mixture screw with a plastic cover.
All the best Alex

Alex,

Post up some pics of what you are working with and the more knowledgeable will be able to help you identify what you are working with.

On the XS650 they made changes in the carbs every two years. Some minor others major. You need to know what year carb set you have.
If your bike is an 80 or 81 then it should have the BS34 carbs. Easy way to tell is the top is a thin chromed steel top. The BS 38's of the earlier bikes have cast alloy tops.
The 80 used brass floats, 81 up used plastic floats.
www.amckayltd.com/carbguide.pdf was written by some of the best carb people around. Read it. Print it out. Read it. No follow the steps to tear down, clean, inspect your carbs. Now if your inspection has found worn parts or damaged gaskets buy just the parts you need.
Now reassemble your carbs, adjusting the settings as you go. Once assembled install on the bike. Test as described in the "Tuning for Mods " section. Use the findings from the testing to further adjust the carbs. Depending on mods you have done you may need to just adjust the mix screws or even rejet.

From the pic in your album, it appears you have '81 or newer BS34s. The "tells" are the previously mentioned "tin" tops and the drain screws on the lower sides of the float bowls.

Here are some picture hopefully.
