Just unpacked my new Win10 box. I've put off abandoning Win7 as long as I can, but I want to download and run Fusion 360 for a 3D CAD program and that ain't happening on my old box. New box is more RAM, faster processor and an SSD drive which should speed things up considerably.

Got them set up in parallel at the moment while Win10 configures itself, but at some point I have to transfer all my crapola off the Win7 Box and onto the new one.

I work on an elderly friend's Win10 box occasionally, and the biggest aggravation is that they moved everything. I understand there are ways to make the desktop more closely emulate Win7 and I'll be looking into that.

I remember when Winders 8 came out.... no start button? Wtf??? Thankfully, Classic Shell returned some normalcy...

One more vote for Classic Shell!

I'm getting to the point where I really need to upgrade my tower as the latest version of Windoze 10 is not liking this machine with 4 GB memory and that is the max it can have installed. Looking at maybe getting a refurbished unit that is only a couple years old that has 16GB of memory and a new SSD.

Well, so far (knock on simulated wood) it's been fairly painless.

Last major hurdle is getting my licensed video editor moved. I think all I need to do is uninstall it on my old box, install it on my new box and use the old activation code.

    I think...

Fwiw DE, deep down W10 is still just a Winders system. You can still edit the Registry. Do make a backup first... (a friend told me that ) Command line operations are still there.... All the old school stuff is still there, just buried under a bunch of shiny bits.

Okey doke - I just hope I haven't succumbed to COVID by then...

I have to say Gary - that new avatar you swiped from Dude is absolutely superb.

I'm not so certain that it applies to you - but it sure is clever.

    Well, poop.

CPU fan on the refurb computer died three days in. Supplier would replace it under warranty, but I expect it would be by replacing the whole box exchange. That would mean starting from scratch, deleting all my files and software and being without the computer for a couple of weeks minimum.

If I open the box to replace the fan myself, it "voids the warranty" as I have to remove the seal on the cover.

OTOH, I paid less than $300 for the box, I can get the fan from Fee Bay for $10 and replace it myself in about 10 minutes and screw the 90 day warranty.

Guess which way I'm going? Hint: the fan will be here Monday...

Is the fan an "always blowing" type, or controlled by thermal-sensing firmware?

You could just mount it on the OUTSIDE of the box and have it either push or pull air through the grill.....?

You make me feel better, Pete. I struggle with all this stuff in front of me. The wrench was easier. Just now, I had someone walking me through like leading the blind across the street.
