Kick start headache!!

Please help 81 xs650, I put the kick start back in, works fine until I put the crank case cover back on, kick start arm will go down but not return
This only happens when the screws in the cover have been tightened.

Sounds like the shaft is binding once the case is tightened down. You may not have the shaft installed correctly or seated in completely. Here's a thread that may help .....

It could also be the cover itself. Check for cracks inside around the kicker hole, and the mounting surface for excess gasket material. Worst "case" scenario, you might need a new/good used cover
