I picked up this set of forks a while back for my build and didn't notice at the time, but they seem to be a little different. They have a little sticker on the bottom saying KYB and appear to have some adjustment that I do not believe is stock. They are 35mm and the trees seem to be stock as well as the break, although it does have some numbers stamped into the caliper. I did some hunting and can't seem to find much info on them, what is different about them?

Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Looks like 35MM Yamaha forks. The top caps slotted are stock. If you want a stiffer ride with a big screw driver press down and turn clockwise. They are at the top setting now so you have two more adjustments you can make. Looks like a stock Yamaha caliper. The 1234 stamped not sure who stamped that might have been for ID if the bike was stolen or who assembled it. The black paint came on some of the heritage special models some had painted fenders. It appears to be off a 650. Probably a 1983 heritage model my guess.

The 1982 XS650SJ had black forks. That is likely what you have. It's the only one that came that way.

I don't know what year the preload adjuster was added to the forks, but the '82 Heritage would definately have them. I have an '81 with the preload adjusters as well.

Well, I learn something new every day! Thanks for the info guys, the parts diagrams were making me think it was something else.
