Hi everyone, my name is Peter.
I’ve been playing with the idea of getting back riding motorcycles for some time now. First a wanted to get an old Moto Guzzi, but they’re hard to find here in Canada and if so very expensive. Than I wanted to import an old Ural M72 from eastern Europe, where I'm from, but turn out to be too much hassle. Trying to find a good candidate for a café racer I came across the xs650, I loved the old English motorcycle look and discovering this site and the amazing support this community offers I figured this is the way to go.
I've been doing a lot of reading on this site since January, so finally I got the time and courage to post. I'm the proud owner of a 1978 xs650 special with 32k km for a month now, its really appropriate since 1978 is the year I'm born so I'm going to go with that ‘78 theme.
I'm in the process of getting my driver license now, I haven't ridden for almost 15 years now since I'm in Canada. I had my license but I had a year to change it which I didn’t know, I had other priorities so it got tossed aside, now I have to go through all the process.
I will surely need tons of help as I'm planning to build this bike so just please bear with me. I have over a year till I get my full license so that will give me plenty of time to get it done. I have some mechanical knowledge but limited mechanical tools and I'm good of figuring things out, by trade I’m a specialized contractor in construction, master of my domain, I own my own company, I still don’t know how will I fit this project in my tight schedule.

here is my first glitch, the starter wasn't engaging and the kickstart only turned the engine sometimes. when I pick it up PO was able to kickstart it after a couple of shots , it did sound good a little trouble idling but good, after a taking it home spending almost 48 hours in my truck in –35C I couldn't started and might have flooded the carb before bring it in the garage and put it on the stand. Haven't tried starting it since, toke it apart and need both clips managed to brake the kickstart one trying to tighten it. I've ordered new ones, 3 of each just in case. Also managed to loose the little ball in the clutch assy, I have no idea where it went..

You usually don't need to tighten the kick start clip, just the electric start one (on the #4 starter gear).

Thank you all for welcoming me! I already feel like someone got my back.
5twins, I didn't know that, thank you

Yes, there's a tab broken off your case for that spring to hook onto .....

It appears someone drilled some holes in the case to the upper left and tried to hook it in there after the tab broke off.

Will that work? obviously the kickstart it’s been tampered with, and not reinstalled properly, is it fixable? I’ve ordered new clips.

I think there's a fix in the tech section where someone drilled, tapped, and installed a small bolt into the case for the spring to hook onto.

here a few more pictures

I'm going with spoked wheels 19" front with SS spokes, the back I have an extra front hub i have to polish and i'm plannig to buy Omar's kit, but for the rim should I go 18" or 19" for a cafe look? and what with?

you don't think it would be safer to use the holes to hook the spring to as opposed to a bolt that could come loos and fall in between gears
