Recently had a tach cable break. I replaced it with one of Mikes cables (received from a private sale).
The tach would work ok for a short time then the needle would start an erratic bumping.
Removing at the base coupling I could move it back up and it would engage the tach drive again and then fall back down after a while. So I pulled another oem cable to compare.
Flushed at the top end Mikes is a 1/4 inch shorter. You are looking at the broke cable, Mikes and the intact oem.

I don't have a cable stretcher so I needed a way to block/shim Mikes so it would stay in the tach.
A quick look round I found some left over brake line. This may work.
The OD is close and the ID a snug fit over the cable. A 3/8" spacer cut and fitted.

Back in business. Tomorrow I'll run it some to see if it will stay in place.

Looks like that'll work. The brass shoulder looks like it's fitted backwards. The shoulder limits the cable's depth into the drive socket, and is the reference point for cable measurements...

A 25 mile circle, it stayed in place with no jumpy tach readings so the the spacer seems to have worked.
I was not "easy" on it so it had opportunity to fail.
This is from the hi-way to the driveway with the "redneck" Go-Mo.
