need to know asap

sorry i should of been more specific. Im looking at putting a xs 400 rear rim with drum brake onto my hardtailed 79 xs 650. will this work?

I don't think you'll be able to get a quick and easy on this answer.
It will work if your axle is the same diameter, if the rim is the same thickness, and if the drum works on the same levers as the 650. All these are fixable (new axle, spacers for rim, BFH for levers:) ) If you have both then it's probably time to get out the caliper and tape measure and just compare sizes.
Sorry, hopefully someone who has swapped rear rims before can weigh in.

I had an xs400 wheel which had been converted for an xs once, the axle is a differant size, but they had swapped bearings from a 650 wheel as the outer diameter was the same.

On the hardtail frame often even a stock wheel can use a bit of tweeking to get right. The XS400 wheel will just take a bit more than the stock wheel takes. Look at pics of hardtail bikes. You can see how they fixed the brakes. It might give you a few ideas for yours.
