ok can i use an xs 400 rim on my xs 650? can you interchange them and are the brake hubs the same

sorry i should of been more specific. Im looking at putting a xs 400 rear rim with drum brake onto my hardtailed 79 xs 650. will this work?

I don't think you'll be able to get a quick and easy on this answer.
It will work if your axle is the same diameter, if the rim is the same thickness, and if the drum works on the same levers as the 650. All these are fixable (new axle, spacers for rim, BFH for levers
) If you have both then it's probably time to get out the caliper and tape measure and just compare sizes.

I believe you will need different spacers.
On the hardtail frame often even a stock wheel can use a bit of tweeking to get right. The XS400 wheel will just take a bit more than the stock wheel takes. Look at pics of hardtail bikes. You can see how they fixed the brakes. It might give you a few ideas for yours.
