no fifth gear

Hi All, This is my first build. I cannot get into fifth gear and thought it was a four speed! How do I start to investigate this problem? I have a 78 650 special. done lots of mods (pma, electronic ignition, pipes new carbs, new wiring, solid clutch pushrod ect) but not sure how to proceed..

just to be clear, yes may seem a stupid question, but just to get it out of the way.....
its 1 down and four up, are you sure your not starting out in second gear?
Im not saying your stupid, or don't know what your doing, Im just clarifying.

There is an adjustment on the shift shaft. It's under the right side engine cover. Your repair manual has the "How To"
If the adjustment is too far off it can't rotate the shift drum all the way into fifth gear.

For stock gearing, in 5th gear, that's about right.
I use a rough guesstimate of about 15mph for every 1000 rpms...
