Oil Level? sight glass.

I guess I may be on the wrong forum,
I thought this was for ALL 650 Yamahas...but since I cant find a forum on the 650 Yamaha Maxim I would still like to see if I can get some help with this.

I have recently purchased a 1982 Yamaha 650 Maxim

No dipstick to check oil

there is a sight glass.

Problem is I cant really tell if the oil level is up or the sight glass is stained on the inside from oil.

Looking at it it looks full, brown color looking at sight glass.


I just dont want to wait until the oil light pops on and ruin the engine.

Any help?

Pop it on a centre stand and shine a torch in- you should pick it out

In where the oil fill is? Or shine light at sight glass?
I did shine light right on sight glass just looks brownish

Get someone to help you. Look at the glass while your helper leans the bike from side to side. If that doesn't do it for you, remove the cover and clean the glass. You might want to drain the oil first.

Shine a light into the filler hole and see if that helps to brighten the area around the sight glass. That sometimes helps.
