im looking to install an oil psi gauge on my xs, im sure alot of you have done this, whats the best location to grab oil psi from and what is a good oil psi for these engines. my 81 only has 8k on it and and runs great, but im courious on the proper psi reading? thanks

Most here do not use a guage because the pressure is really low on these engine's, like 15 psi. Now, if you really want to install one, contact PamcoPete here on this site. He did one for testing purpose's.

1. Use a Marshal liquid filled 0 to 15 PSI gage. Must be liquid filled or it will self destruct from the vibration.
2. The engine will show 15 to 20 PSI on startup, cold.
3. Keep the revs low to prevent damage to the sump filter until the engine warms up.
4. Shift gears at 15 PSI until it warms up.
5. 3 to 7 PSI @3,000 RPM when hot.
6. 0 PSI when idling hot.

Here's the gage mounted on my '81/H
