Robin you were asking about the cam sprocket. I happen to have a couple of reference photos from my teardown.
I don’t know if this helps you visualize anything, you probably took photos like them during your teardown. Something else I was thinking about, if you are associating the ticking noise with the source of your metal flakes, then that would seem to rule out your cam, since the tick seems to emanate from the right side of the crankcase.
Just spit balling here, I know just enough to get me in trouble.

Ok, so I gotta put some miles on eh?.........awright.......

Had a couple meetings out of town today, only 15 minutes more to the lake so figured we'd go check out the beach and the fishing boats.

Musta took a wrong turn, required 100 miles in 5th at 4200-4300 to get straightened out

Found this pretty spot.....

When I got home figured she oughta be warmed up by now. No tick, can't make it tick, can't find a tick, now I'm ticked! :D

Holy Cow! Those are some beautiful photos! Looks like enough to fill a calendar all by itself! You sure do have that bike lookin and runnin sweet. So happy to hear that your tick is MIA, I truly hope it stays that way. By the way, I don’t think there are any places that green in all of Arizona!

Great to see you having some fun on your bike, Robin !!

I agree with Bob that you've got some calendar pics, there !

Good riddance to that tick.

Thanks Dude. I really had a blast today. Beautiful day, she's running so smooth. If I'd had the time there would've been another 100 or 2 miles on her.

Let's hope that tick or tink stays away. Interesting that it's gone when it's good and warmed up. Maybe that's a clue?

Will see when I fire her up tomorrow morning.

I kinda lost track.
It had a tink-tink-tink.
Then you packed grease around the basket bushing.
And it changed, or went away?
Then the tink returned?
Then you pulled the clutch, found that the grease was washed away, confirming it's getting oil?
Then, after reassembly, a single tink?
And now it's gone?

All I got is thinking that there may have been a lubrication problem in the clutch bushing, which has now corrected itself...

I'm holding my breath before a tick update. Here's my latest kerfuffle.

Noticed yesterday when I got to Baconfest that my left cam seal had been leaking. Couldn't leave that so I quickly wiped it up.

Here's what it looked like this morning.

Cleaned it up....

Then put 70 miles on, mostly highway and here's what it looks like now.....

What really surprise me is that these are new OEM seals that I installed, with Threebond during the rebuild with new o-rings and gaskets are leaking.

I do have 2 more in the parts box but without getting to re and re the seal is there anything else I can try?

Is it the garlock seal leaking or the points housing gasket?

Not sure Jim. That's a good question. I just assumed seal, but it may well be the gasket. Maybe I can use an inspection mirror to look at the bottom of the gasket behind the points cover and see if it's wet. I'll check that later when I can get back into the shop.

There was oil in the bottom of the points housing though which made me think seal.

"In the later nineteenth century, Olin J. Garlock devised a better way to seal piston rods in industrial steam engines. The invention led to the creation of Garlock Sealing Technologies. Founded in 1887, in Palmyra, New York, Garlock has become a leader in the fluid sealing industry and a cornerstone of the EnPro Industries family.
For a complete history of Garlock see "Garlock-The First Eighty-Eight Years 1887-1975" by R.M. Waples, Sr. and R.M. Waples, Jr"

Good ol' Mr Olin Garlock invented the dynamic seal that uses a spring to force the lip onto the sealing surface. In the aviation world we simply called 'em "garlock seals." There's your history lesson for the day....

While you’re waiting to hear ideas regarding your cam seal, let me just say those are some nice photos. And also how do you like your new tail bag, now that you have had it a while?
