Yes, timing being that far off on the right is going to make that side run ratty. Read through this, it explains the timing and "what" happens when you do "this or that" .....
When setting used points, many times they have pits so what you measure is not what you're gap really is. It's usually bigger than that. Set used point near or at the minimum gap.
5twins, I especially appreciate your continued contributions, in light of the fact that if I had THOROUGHLY read the carb guides from the beginning this thread would have been about 1 page shorter. Long story short, IT RUNS, and it runs PERFECT! I spent about a day and a half messing with the points when today, I bought a new set, set gap and the timing dead on where it was supposed to be and it didn't start. Then I remembered something that Pyrocentric said here: http://www.xs650.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1604 about things possibly being in reverse. I switched the coil leads and it popped off and ran perfectly. I credit the carbs being perfect from the carb guide overhaul I preformed for sure, and I've been riding ever since. It has been an effort at this moment to pull myself away to get some sleep and jump on it first thing tomorrow. Thank you so much everyone for your invaluable intuitions and insights, I hope that I can be able to contribute as much in return some day.
