Pre 76 brake noise fix

I noticed on my 76 iron caliper brake that with the shims in behind the pucks they drag and squeal. I tried reversing them and taking them out. With no shims the brakes work well, but the pads rattle around. Today I cut some little rubber bands out of 1/4" ID silicone tubing about 3/8" wide. Put them on the tabs. This stops pads from rattling around. Good cheap fix.
