Hi guys I hope i've posted this in the right section, I have been searching for a rear luggage rack over here in blighty for my 78 xs650e I have found one for sale that came off an xs650se any idea if this will fit mine?
No......Rear shock top mounts on the Specials are located more towards the front than the Standards, The guard mount brackets wont line up with yours when the grab-rail is connected to the shock mounts
Could cut off the lugs and shorten the arms and weld them back on to suit the Standard..........Bugger up the chrome though........no idea how difficult the standard ones are to come by. They may be fairly rare as were only on the 78E and 79F standards.
Ooh that's a spendy one. And using one does require cutting the left side frame grab loop off.
I'm always looking around for one of those "amco" brand . They were nicely made and had emovable backrests
Try to keep an eye out for a KG rack . Found one for for my 78 XS650E on craigslist here in New York last summer. Same as in this ebay listing below, for reference. They claim it’s for an 82, but it has extendable/retractable side rails that ended up fitting quite well on my 78 standard. It even has ears to mount the factory turn signals and a sissy bar attachment. Has been great so far. I can highly recommend.
I dont see them in Dune’s photos, but i think the removable L brackets for the turn signals may have doubled as a support mount on my 78E. I can send a close up of them on mine this evening for reference. If they are necessary, I think fabricating something to replace them wouldn’t be that hard and still worth buying the rack. Certainly easier than modifying the bike itself for a rack.
Well it looks like there will need to be a little modification.
The front arms look like they line up with the shock mounts, but the rear fixing point at the indicators are too far out ( see photo )
But i think longer bolts with a tube type spacer would be ok to pack it out to make it fit
( hope that makes sense )
Thanks Steve for going to the trouble of offering it up to your brother in-laws bike I can see what you mean but I'm sure I can get round that, I'll be in touch and see you at the weekend.
These are the KG rear mount brackets. There is a teardrop shaped hole on the lower half of the motorcycle side of bracket that the rubber grommet for the turn signal pops into.
Thanks for posting those pics, I see what you mean now Dunes rack must have those brackets missing but I'm sure I will be able to get some fabbed up similar to yours.
I have one stamped "ANCO" that I don't need, looks a lot like Dune's KG above. They are adjustable in the width and length from hole to hole and the adjustment is kind of hidden. It attaches to the shock studs and in the back with longer grab rail bolts. At the back takes a spacer (or stack of washers) on each side about 1 1/2". I had the sissy bar too but stupidly at the time threw it away.
It fits a Special, don't know about other years. I do know some of the racks for earlier years do include a place to mount the turn signals. I also know this was about my 3rd try before I got one that fit a Special.
