starter problems, advice please

My satrter is acting up. Sometimes it will work fine. Other times (more often than not) it seems to engage and then wind out. Sometimes it just winds out. Have been told it sounds like the starter gear is bad. Has anyone replaced one? How hard is it to do and where should I get the parts? Thank you in advance.
