You are not alone; I snapped off two screw drivers removing a PO's mashed on rear axle nut last month. I finally had to cut and split the nut off the axle.
I had the same problem. My disk brake caliper mount has siezed onto the axle. give it a good soak with some wd, pb blaster or what ever you have and like gggary said get a piece aluminum or hard wood and give it a good smack with a B.F.H.
