I just got my 76 xs650 together and set the timing as instructed. Using my timing light at idle the marks are almost right on however as I am watching the mark on the stator moves back and forth just slightly. Is this normal or should I look for something else?

With a points ignition with a mechanical advance, a couple degrees of 'spark scatter' is normal.
As this 'spark scatter' widens, it would be prudent to service the ignition components, for example:
Ignition points condition.
Points cam lubrication.
Mechanical advance springs.
Mechanical advance weight ears and their engagement on the slotted rotor.
Mechanical advance shaft.
