Is a 1980 transmission the same as a 1981 transmission?

Yes. Same thing. I believe there is some difference in the kick starter gear in the very early XS-1 and XS-2, but all late models are interchangable.
They made some changes in the way the gears rode on the shafts in 78. So from about 73-74 up to early 78 were the same, late 78 up the same.
As littlebill mentioned the 70 up to 72-73 were a bit different.
But as far as your 80 to 81 swap yes, they are the same.
There is a thread on here by Jayel I think it was about transmission. Might want to read up and be sure.
