I've worked on these.... put a 74' motor in a 73' ..... only real difference is the 74' has the deeper oil pan. They pull like a Kenworth... smooth.. and quiet !

I think these were the ones with engine problems. I worked at a Yamaha shop during this time and had many engine repairs under warranty.

Yessir, they did but yamaha came up with some changes and if the bike was repaired under the recall they were much improved. Unfortunately they had gotten a negative reputation and didn't sell well.
That's why they are becoming collectable now. Very few still around.
