So in my custom build i initially had the coil hidden just below the tank by welding in some little standoffs. A bit of a redesign of the way the tank sits means i can't hide it there any longer. Im considering making and welding some tabs so it sits in front of the motor.

Thing is, its not the best looking piece of kit.... Do many of you custom install them behind the carbs or under the seat? Any problems with heat etc?

churs:thumbsup:

Not sure if you have a hard tail or cafe style. Here is how I set mine up. Nothing crazy just kept it clean and practical. Made a cover for them. It works, maybe can give ya a better idea of some mounting.. :) PS Beer is def good :p

One of a coils greatest enemies is heat. They get warm. They need good air flow to keep cool. Raty's cover leaves enough exposed for good air flow. Looks good to.

Behind the carbs (in between the uni filters) is an obvious and neat place. It just seems like it might not get enough air flow there. Anyone do it and have problems/no problems?

It will get more then enough back there. :) let's not forget people put them up under the tanks, what does heat do ? You got it rise lol. So they are constantly getting heat soaked.

This is where I stuck mine..
I like how the Harley/Sportster style coils orient their cable, upways. ..

I dont know why a good set of coils looks so damn good to me..
Best cables on a bike! plug cables .. .

I totally agree.................coils and plug wires should be on display for the whole world to see. Especially important if the wires are yellow:D

Coil out in front gets lots of cool air.

The member "ember" runs them up front on the front motor mount and mentions he hasn't run into any issues.

Im not totally convinced i want to have it on display :)

I was leaning toward up front, making a little cross member that sits above the front mount so the coil is mounted vertically with tabs like Jdizon used. Then having a some one with mad metal skills make a custom curved 'vented shield' type thing, something really sharp.

Hiding right under the front mounts looks quite tidy too.

From this is can see that as long as it has some space, you can pretty much put em anywhere. Everyone has a different spot and idea!

Finally what about at the apex of the swing arm, i.e. on the swing arm itself (leaving slack to account for movement)? Anyone tried that? Or too much vibration etc?

When it's up under the tank it gets a lot of airflow. The front of the tank channels air back and under the tank. As long as your moving it gets plenty of air.

Spent some more time looking through the forum archives. Collected a bunch more pictures of places people set them up. Here they are collected. Might be useful for some one in the future. Note the dynateks are the ones Hugh likes to use.

Just a word of caution. I am running a set of the Dyna coils and mounted them up front with the wires coming in from the top. I didn't think about it at the time, but the coils have a small dish near the connectors and one day while riding in the rain the bike died and I couldn't figure out why. Turns out the water was shorting out the coil once enough water built up. Ended up flipping the coils the other way and they worked just fine. I know its not the same coil, but that wasn't on my mind at all during the build and I had to figure that out the hard way.
