Unable to separate carbs!

I can't seem to undo the Phillips screws holding the two carbs together, you know, the big L-shaped bracket. I have tried penetrating oil, heat, screwdriver(!!), but I'm very reluctant to use an impact driver. I'm worried I may crack the cast ally body.

They are the BS34's off an 81 Special.

Is it at all possible to strip the carbs while they still together?

Bear in mind this is my first ever mechanical endeavour!!!

a hand impact driver, the kind you hit with a hammer, should do the trick. it's also a tool you should have in your repertoire anyways.

you can still get the carbs cleaned up without separating. but to replace the throttle shaft seals (which probably are toast anyways) i think you need to separate them, or at least it makes it easier.

Got one of those, thanks! I really did want to strip them completely so I can check all is OK.

Use some vise grips and twist. Works every time.

When you put it back together, do it with screws that look like this.
