What have you done to your XS today?

Finished up the wiring and install of Pete's E-advance after pulling the motor for a top end freshen up due to a base gasket leak (added new cam chain guide, tensioner, piston rings, cam chain). Spent so much time getting that wiring looking good and clean again.

All I have left to do now is reinstall the tank, gas it up, fire it up, and check the timing. Still have to install an OEM rear break switch when it arrives this week. During the rebuild process I discovered that my MikesXS rear brake switch had split in half and no longer worked. NICE....god knows how long my brake light wasn't working. Last time I cheap out on that.

Fndirtygreaser, I pull the choke housings off and sanded them flat on a piece of glass with 600 grit wet/dry paper.A little bit of wd40 for some lube works well. 400 grit would've been faster, but the 600 is what I had on hand.
Mine were warped from tightening the screws too tight,I could see it after I sanded them a little.
I'll blame the PO,but I'm sure I had something to do with it.:D

Today I checked for fresh oil drips. None.
Yesterday I buttoned it back up after exchanging the factory fiber clutch plates for Ippy's Alto 8 pack. While in there I tighten the clip spring on the #4 gear, made sure the shift springs weren't broke, and adjustment on the star wheel was up to snuff.
Cleaned oil screen filters, annealed the copper washers and just generally gave it the look over. Then rode the piss outta it to check the new clutch plates for slippage.
Redlined 3rd and 4th gear several times. Mostly rode 5-6K in 3rd. Because of the road conditions could only manage 6K in 5th but was on a steep grade where I have experienced top end slippage before.
Last fall I had loosened the cam chain adjustment. . . .extremely (jus 2 c). So loose after it warmed up on the ride home I pulled in for gas and a fellow in the gas lanes walked over and asked if I "shouldn't check the oil level as it sounds kinda rough". Rough? It sounded like it was coming apart on the next revolution with all the hammering and slapping. The next oil change showed I had managed to knock pieces of the side rail off the front guide. But now I know what an "way outta" adjustment chain sounds like and acts. This oil change(cam chain re-adjusted to MY interpretation of correct after the last oil change) not so much crap. A small (1/2 inch) sliver of side rail, the miscellaneous silver flake, some red slivers I think may be from the filter adhesive and the steel dust on the magnet. I've decided I must be doing something wrong. The filter(6K miles) and gasket(11K miles) looked good nuff 2 me so back in they went for another roun. I'm meaning by now, according to some, I should have had to change the filter and gasket, added JB or sumthin.
Ah well, ima :bike: with it.
I will be adding my experience with the new clutch plates in Ippy's thread a little later.
I need to get the pics and comments in order. But 4 the quick and dirty I'll say :thumbsup: Ippytattoo.

I recently swapped my clutch cable and lever to a hydraulic pit bike setup.

I took the bike on a short 8 mile trip today to test the clutch. I love it!!! It's dead positive, easy to pull, yet still feels like a clutch.

When I got home I realized my taillight wasn't doing so great. I would have thought my home grown led conversion would have given up first, but it was the housing that broke.

I was going to go that route since I hated when it was a pita to find neutral. But when foot clutch instead. Now I can always find neutral. And something always raffles loose !!!! Xs650 for ya. Haha.

thanks dude. the older bikes had long springs too. 30' - 50' they looked way better, but these should ease the hard tail a little more than 2 or 3" springs.

I got 3 inch coil replacement for my sagged out old ones I had. And the sea was to high for me. I got used to riding low position. I cut a few coils off. Lol. So I'm assed out and have to suffer the hardtail ride. I'm interested to see how you will feel once you ride it

hey diesel is this licence plate bolted to the axle or shock bolt, whered yo get it ?

It is mounted to the axle bolt. I had it cut localy by CNC plasma then welded it together.

That totally solved my neutral problems. It made it a completely different bike to ride..

Will be helping my buddy on my days off. If you are in SoCal area and need a shop come on by. Today adjusted chain, synced carbs via vac gauges, smoothed out the welds that held on the license plate and drilled new hole for my shifter. Less play in the shifting now.

Got my seat covered finally, and wired up the bugeye light with two bulbs instead of one and a couple relays so I have turn and stop in one housing...

Finally pulled oil filter to find the dreaded rip on it. Used some sturdy cardboard and glue/silicone it in. Looked good. And did last and final hole on my shifter linkage arm. Made my mount for shifter a bit sturdier.

It's a nice and warm day so I took the SG out to the Tom Mix Memorial on SH 79. Seems that the battery didn't recharge on the way out. I found that out when the starter motor gave me a few revolutions and stopped. Kickstarted it and rode her home. About a 120 mile round trip. Well, time to find out what's with the charging system...

After 175 miles out and about solo yesterday testing my ex500 cvk40 carb swap jetting (needles too lean still) I put my Throwback buddy Wonderboy to work on a skid plate for the Yambler today:

I dig the repurposing of the sign
