Widest rear tyre/swinging arm combo

Im looking for a swinging arm mod or swap that will allow the widest tyre to be fitted to a 83 XS650 Heritage Special. Can anyone help?

If the chain is being driven in the usual manner, with the sprocket close to the engine, that is going to be limiting. As far as tire size, it's going to depend upon the brand, as they don't all run true to size. 140/90-16 may fit in some tire brands. The swingarm modification won't buy much room due to interference with the chain.

Even w/ offset sprockets, you'll still have to contend w/ shock clearance and maybe even frame clearance. BUT, swap over to monoshock and you just might be able to get something even wide in there. Why do you want to go wide? With the bikes geometry, a wider tire is only going to slow down turn in...

Are any of you guys reading this running a 5.00-16 vintage tire on the back? Does it fit a stock frame & swingarm?
