Good day gents, I have got myself a little stumped and need a little direction. I am in the process of making my own wiring harness for my cafe at the moment. My question is on the main relay.

I have the original main relay but I am curious if some one can either point me to a more simplified relay out there to do the job or has some intimate knowledge on how to use the original in the fashion I am trying to use it. I have read the Hanes booklet several times over and to no avail. I have attached my wiring diagram I am using and (which I picked up on these boards) and a photo of the wiring from the main relay I am trying to figure out.

I have a sneaking suspicion that I have missed the boat somewhere along the line. Thanks in advance for the help.

I assume the original main relay to which you are referring is the safety relay. See attachment. The wiring diagram you posted shows that you'll be using the PMA swap, so as far as I know you won't be able to use the safety relay.

The wiring diagram you are using was used by member ippytattoo, Here's a link to his project. http://www.xs650.com/forum/showthread.php?t=14294
You'll see some pictures of his setup and the fine work he's doing on his bike. Scroll to posting #10 to read his explanation of the relay.

Dakota Lew,

That Main Relay is not a part of the original wiring. It is just a general purpose relay that you can buy at most auto parts stores. It is used to provide direct power from the battery to the coil to ensure that the coil gets the full battery voltage.

These relays are typicall about $5.

Note: You cannot use this arrangement with a PMA and capacitor setup because there is no voltage to begin with to operate the relay.

Awesome, thank you very much!

I do plan on using a battery and not a capacitor. Its guaranteed I will kill it at an in opportune time so ha...
