wiring rec/reg combo question

Hows it goin i have a 79xs650 with a 79 rec/reg i followed this wiring digram except i didnt use the nylon screws and the black wire out of the stator with the brown wire out of the rec/ reg. because i wasnt getting and spark with either of them.now the bike runs without that hooked up and my battery is charging im just worried i didnt wire it right any suggestion?

i have the same question, is everything on your bike stock? i think it depends on the rectifier and how it controls the ground. some are electronic. anxious to hear from somebody who knows!!! im doing pretty much same thing except i was hasty and bought the other rectifier that doesnt have the regulator built in so now im just gonna go grab a regulator from parts store, they told me $15. but i still am confused about the 3 screw issue too
