XS1100 Special front wheel on XS650 Special

- - - So I guess my main question is, based on the parts I listed, and not needing a master cylinder, that should be all I need right?

Hi Fazz,
FWIW, unless you are buying enough stuff from MikesXS in one order that the shipping won't break you, those metric fasteners can be bought at any fastener specialist store, as can single coil spring washers to use in place of tab washers.
Note:- Spring washers have stopped my front disc bolts from vibrating loose ever since I had the discs off to drill them 7 years back.
But as to what else you'll need, a vacuum pump and the patience of a Saint to help you bleed out the brake lines.

That's a big MAYBE. Look up some of the specs on Harley-Davidsons. Some have dual brakes as an option. You might find shorter stopping with a single rotor. Duals give you more stops without fading.

Agreed Marty..................that was just a guesstimation on my part. That's why I use a single disc brake on the front..................very powerful with a Brembo 4 piston caliper.

On your "new" rotors. They might be 5 mm thick instead of 7 mm thick.
I bought a set of rotors the seller claimed came off an XS1100. When I got them they were 5 mm thick. This surprised me. I thought the XS1100 used the thicker rotors. This set may have come off an XS1100 but the factory didn't put them on there.
The 5 mm rotor will save you about 28 % on the weight. Not sure how much in pounds but that's a fair amount. Maybe make up for the extra caliper.
I have these on my 75 with a 14 mm M/C and they work great. I have a set of the 7 mm on the 81 Special. They work great too.
If you do try a single disc set up, try a 11 or 10 mm bore M/C.

Just to clarify, depending upon your riding style, two brakes on the front wheel shouldn't be a bad thing. In Europe and Oceana, the XS650 came that way. In my opinion, one is better than two for my riding style and reasons given.

Carry on.

So back to the original question, will a 19 inch rim from a xs1100 fit a xs650 special that has a 19 inch rim? I have a bent rim on my 1980 Yamaha xs650 special that is causing some wobble and was wondering if I could use a xs1100 rim as a replacement.

Hmmm better check a part place like Bandit and see if the part number match first..

So even the xs650 rotor fits onto it and lines up? And the speedometer gear drive?

Hi Jax,
except that the very early XS1100 Standard's cast front wheel's rim configuration won't run tubeless
it's the very same identical 7-spoke cast front wheel on every XS series bike, 650/750/850/1100.
Everything is the same including the speedo drives and the brake disk mounting pattern.
Note that the XS750/850 brake disks are the same smaller diameter as the XS650 rear disk
while the XS1100 wheel's slotted disks work perfectly on an XS650 and save you a tedious drilling job.
And if you want to run tubeless on a 1966 or earlier XS650, those model's differently dished 2-part disks fit too.

To be clear, any XS1100 front wheel will swap to your 1978 XS650 without modification. The brake rotor is also identical no matter if it comes from a Special or standard.

there is a slight visual difference on the XS850 i have.

On the XS650 the spoke is shaved from the rim end to the hub. the spoke is 32mm wide at the hub before it curves to the hub like at the rim.

The XS850 has the same curve at the rim end but is not shaved at the hub, the spoke is 43mm wide at the hub with no curve.

I am assuming the XS1100 is the same and the spokes are due to the heavier bike..........Only a visual thing..........

- - - I'll be darned if I know the difference! - - - .

Hi Marty,
what I do know because I did it ( because I was too lazy to swap a tire from one wheel to another)
is that the cast wheel from the front of my 1984 XS650 Heritage Special fits perfectly in my 1980 XS11 Special.
And that when I swapped the XS650 back to running cast wheels (because I got too lazy to keep it's 1976 wire wheels
polished) the cast front from my XS11 also fitted perfectly.
And although I'm also too lazy to go and check my wheels' ident #s I too will be darned if I know the difference.

Here is what i was on about.
