Just bought a spare front hub/drum c/w the brake plate.
Not actually seen it in the metal yet, only photos, but it's all looking salvageable, except for the speedo drive, which is looking too far gone in my guesstimation.
Is there any way to save this ?
Or am I looking at a GPS Speedo conversion ?l

Too soon to be pessimistic if you ask me. Hard to know what's going on from just that pic. If the rest of the wheel is salvageable, I think the speedo drive is probably salvageable too.

:agree:
Go in (very carefully) and see.
Maybe start with a vinegar rinse?

I was under the impression that any sort of acid had a bad reaction with Aluminium or Aluminium Alloy castings.
I was thinking more about giving the brake plate a gentle roasting in the gas oven

You're getting way ahead of your self. Wait until you actually have it in hand before you start rehabilitating it.
What's probably going to happen: Use air and a stiff brush to get rid of the bulk of that salt/alumina oxide/whatever it is powder -- most of it will come right out. Soak with penetrating fluid, and remove the snap ring, gears etc. Clean everything, and you'll be just fine.
