i have a 81 xs650sh. The connecting rods are shot. The connecting rods are all one piece. unfortunately every single manual i own and have borrowed shows how to remove the crankshaft but, nothing on how to disassemble it. i need to know what tools i need or what they look like at least, i will need to press everything apart. any help would be greatly appreciated

You have to press out the pins to remove the rods and bearings. Putting them back together is way more difficult to get right,I strongly recommend you have it done by a pro, it will end up being way cheaper.

ive got my boss whos been a mechanic for 45 years but hes never done one of these before

- this is the heart of the machine, one that has a well deserved reputation as a vibrator, get it wrong and your engine isnt going to be healthy for long...its not just about having a press, you need to calibrate the runout-an understanding of balance helps too...there are specialists for this...i agree with dwyatt that in the end this is cheap, but not infallible, insurance

Not to blaspheme but aren't the Harleys all pressed cranks? There must be about a bazillion shops that know how to do it.

Yamaman i definately owe you some serious ass kissing! If you ever need any help finding any parts you lemme know. MUAH!

I had a local machinist who specializes in motorcycle machining do mine: Rhea Machining in So. Houston, TX. He'd done these types of cranks before. Actually, I had the crank rephased to 277 degrees, which required almost complete disassembly. He did a good job.

H-D cranks are very simular to our 650 cranks, they have big nuts on each end of the rod big ends. So they bolt together.
