XS650SF front fork/axle spacing woes

Well i just measured a lower yoke. From one edge to the other of the holes where the forks go, the widest point measures 220mm give or take.

Sweet, thanks. That's this measurement ya (on the bottom yoke tho obviously):

Out side to out side the 220 mm is right. the inside to inside the 149 or 150 mm is right. Depending on the tubes. 34 mm tubes vs 35 mm tubes.
Measure both the top tree and bottom tree.
If they are wider I can't say what they are from. I know the XS750, 850 and 1100 all used the same fork spacing. Just different tube sizes. I have a set of 37 mm tubed XS1100 forks right here. They are the same spacing.
Pics of your trees will help. Showing the spacing with measurements won't hurt either.

Gentleman, I think that's my problem. Bottom yoke measures ~224-5mm across, which sounds like its too wide? The top yoke measures ~220mm as expected. Sounds like that would cause my problem.

Now the question is: Is the bottom yoke the wrong one or has it just undergone some kind of trauma to cause this? There is a '5' stamped underneath the bottom yoke and nothing else. Top yoke has all the expected yamaha stampings

hmmmm. 5mm difference on the lower yoke could be making the forks sit in a sort of slight triangle i suppose???? I guess that little difference there could equal the greater difference at the axle. What is the inside to inside measurement? (As per that photo you uploaded when asking me to clarify).

If we assume it is in need of replacement for now, perhaps call Andrew at XS Graveyard. He will have a lower yoke you could buy cheap. Might not be straight though!
Other possibility is a NOS one of ebay....

150mm inside to inside on the top yoke, 154-155mm on the bottom yoke. Man, that sucks. I've just spent some coin getting the thing straightened and now I need a new one :( I might ping Steve from F1 a message and see what he thinks

D'you have Andrew's details? I haven't been able to dig it up via google

Measure center to center.

Replace the forks back in the triple tree and then do the center to center just below the top and bottom triple then where the inner meets the outer. That will tell you if the triple is the problem or not.

With the front end assembled and everything torqued down, I'm getting 190mm (approx) center to center under the top triple and 195mm~ under the bottom. The spacer-side fork leg goes in easily, upon further inspection installing the speedo side leg requires the stanchion to be at a (very slight, but measurable...) angle between the top and bottom brace.

Myth busted, its the bottom triple clamp, the fork mounts are spread. Now the question is: Apply a judicious amount of brute-force and ignorance and attempt to straighten or go for second hand parts? Anyone do a billet bottom yoke ?

I'm a bit concerned about your measurements.

2 Sets of forks and both of then are 185-86 mm Center to center

1st 6 are one set and the second 6 are another with a bent tube and has had damaged triple

Ya, sorry, was using a straightedge and rushing. 185 on the fork tops, 185 below the top yoke, 190 below the bottom yoke, 194ish(?) at the dust seals. It's the bottom yoke for sure, now I just need to fix it >.<

71mm from the steering stem to the outside of each fork hole. Starting to think I have a bottom yoke from a different model. Time to find some new parts I suppose :banghead:

I had this problem, I was narrower at the bottom than at the top. My top tree was bent. I was lucky to have another on hand.
