XS750 tank on a XS650?

Yea and you would be complaining about a sore arse instead of to many fuel stops.....

Imagine doing it to out 850 Standard 22 liter tank...........would take out to around 27 liters

My friend and I both swapped to 750 tanks to give the bikes a more tuff look to match the fork swap we did. We mounted the rubber pucks to our frames with brass caps in the middle of them to help keep their shape and just ran a bolt though the frame to hold them on. My friend used his stock seat pan and trimmed it to fit the new tank and had new foam and then had it recovered. I ended up building a new seat pan and had reupholstered, went a little thin on the foam so it's not the most comfortable. You might need to kinda futs with the rear mount a bit to get the tank to sit just right.

My stock Honda ST1300 tank holds a smidge under 30 litres (about 7.63 USg). The bike goes around 16-20 km/litre (approx. 50 mpUSg) so that’s a theoretical range of 600 km or 373 miles. Depending on where I am, that can translate to more than 5-6 hours :yikes: without a stop. Thus, the problem isn’t gas or @ss capacity - it’s bladder capacity. I usually need to stop to “drain the dragon” before I need to fill the bike.

In the photo below, the rather buxom looking silver tank isn’t the whole thing - there is a lower tank down under the seat as well, sort of like on a Gold Wing. There are no user controls on that lower tank - no reserve valve - and I’ve never actually even seen it, except for the very top surface where the fuel pump for the EFI is mounted.

Standard Tanks 74-79 have the cgas cap in the center of the tank. All Special Tanks have the cap to the side.
Left; 74/75..Center 76-79. Right Special 78-83

74/75 Standard tanks have a raised cap and no side badges., No aftermarket cap alternative. If a tank for sale doesn't have the cap it is worth considering passing up on the deal. Used or OEM gas caps are very hard to find or very expensive if you do.

76/77 Standard tanks have a similar gas cap to the specials. and no side badges. Aftermarket Caps available
These standard caps look the same as Special caps but they arn't and do not interchange

There is a difference with the petcocks.
74-77 have manual petcocks
78/79 have Vacuum operated petcocks

78/79 petcocks are wider at the base and taller than the early 74-77 petcocks. Note in the pics, (silver tank and dark tank with badge missing), the base of the tank where they sit, you can see the earlier Tanks protrude where the petcocks sit. Later Vacuum petcocks tanks are slightly recessed to accommodate the extra height in the petcocks.

Early and late tank petcocks do not interchange. If someone has filled in the bade on the later 78/79 tank check the petcock mounting to determine what tank it is.
Can I use my 81 petcock on the 78-79 tank?
