Solved: bad coil grounding out causing voltage spikes.

Problem solved. A bad coil was grounding out and causing the big voltage spikes. I disconnected the charging system and was still getting erratic readings. I put both of my multimeter leads on the the head and kicked it over and the spikes were showing on the meter every time I kicked it...

This is a very nice troubleshooting guide. I will work through it step by step and respond when I am done. I don’t have alligator clip test probes for my meter, which is required, so I will have to get some. Thank you very much for your response.

I have the main wire harness for a tx650 from mikes. The wire colors are not the same as original. I messaged them but they do not have a cross reference. Does anyone have experience with this harness? Do the colors correspond to the colors on a different year possibly?

Thanks to your link I found the perfect diagram that matches my unit. The only thing I am missing is a ground from the green wire of the reg/rec that goes to the brush. I will add that and if that doesn’t work than It is definitely toast. edit: I just checked the black wire from the brush...

I just swapped that motor from a bike that was charging properly with the old components so unless I have made an error in my wiring than the regulator is bad. My meter couldn’t get any kind of steady reading. It was all over the place. It was unreadable.

Thats true but when I bought the unit about ten years ago, I was unaware of the cheaper way.
