My pal had the same problem and it was vacuum and petcock problem. Check vacuum pipe for leaks and get petcock repair kits with new wee diaphragm or change to non vacuum petcocks should cure it.

Spent a bit more time on the XS650D. Re gapped and checked the points still wouldn't start. Ordered new condensers and got some plugs as well. Once they arrived put plugs in and thought give her a kick over and she started!!! All the messing about and it was crap plugs!!!

The bike was rebuilt by Halco in about 1997 and It did run ok when I first got it going after its six year rest. Could be a spark and fueling thing so will take advice and clean carbs and also check cam chain tension points etc. Thanks all for advice. [/I]

I had backfire problem on 1977 XS650D. Could be contact breakers points not gapped the same. |Because there are two sets they need to be spot on the same gap or ignition can take place slightly out of synch causing backfire.

Hi , The exhausts shown look like T120 Triumph Bonneville style.

He has it listed as a1978 in the heading and a 1976 in the description. The frame number confirms it as a a 1978 XS650E. He calls it all original and it is a street track conversion and can't be original. Carbs are not 34 or 38 cvs either. It has the tacho drive but no tacho.

Getting voltage at coils, checked kill switch getting green ignition neutral light on. May have found poor continuity from coil to points checking later. Going to order new points anyway thanks for reply.
