'81 XS650-SH Left Cylinder Not Firing

If you're not using the sidestand, then the left cylinder thing doesn't make any sense... if only someone had it happening on the right cylinder instead, we might be able to attribute it to a balancing issue. Is there anything inherently different about the two cylinders, other than their...

    Pamco install, blowing ignition fuse

Pete, Very good point. The part number of the old coil is 17-6803. I have coil 17-6822 (brand new, came with the ignition kit) and that tested out within the ranges specified, which is why I assumed my meter was working ok. Still a good idea to verify.

    Pamco install, blowing ignition fuse

Thanks pamcopete, I went to look at what you suggested, but the fuse is now blowing as soon as I turn the ignition to on. I suspected a short somewhere, so I started cleaning up connections. Then I tested the coil (which is new as of last August) per your steps found on another thread...

    Pamco install, blowing ignition fuse

Thanks Derek. I tried another fuse and idled her for a few minutes, then upped the RPMs and the fuse blew again, covers off. One thing I've noticed is that with the new ignition the spark seems much hotter than it used to be. If I can use an analogy, she used to start like an old lady getting...

    Pamco install, blowing ignition fuse

On a related note, is it better to kill the engine with the ignition switch or the kill switch, or doesn't it matter? The documentation for the Pamco ignition says not to leave the ignition on without the engine running, so I was just curious about this.

    Pamco install, blowing ignition fuse

Hey everyone. Got an issue to run by y'all. I'm working my way up to the PMA swap on my '81 650 Special (got stranded last week because the alternator isn't charging adequately - finally biting the bullet). I just got done installing the Pamco ignition, got it wired, started it up (with the...

I'm glad it was an easier fix than mine!

'81 XS650-SH Left Cylinder Not Firing

CheckMark, I would definitely look at the carbs first. What I've found (even more recently than in this thread) is that there is oil vapor coming from the breather hose (the one that connects from the valve cover to the bottom of the air filter assembly, assuming your '77 is the same in this...

'81 XS650-SH Left Cylinder Not Firing

Just so we have some closure with this thread, I thought I'd give an update. Compression Right cylinder: 140 psi, Left cylinder 145 psi. The problem was definitely carb related. After dismantling the carbs, it was obvious that the main air jet on the left side was completely plugged -...

'81 XS650-SH Left Cylinder Not Firing

Thanks shotgunjoe, I'll definitely look into that. I have noticed a small crack in the left one, but that is the only one removed so far.

'81 XS650-SH Left Cylinder Not Firing

If you would all reread the above posts, we had the bike running on one cylinder. Hence, when we did the compression test and found both cylinders to have equal compression (disregarding whether the gage was even accurate), we can be relatively confident that the problem is not due to...

'81 XS650-SH Left Cylinder Not Firing

I guess I might as well get in on this, as I am working with minnesota dave on this very bike. I agree with xjwmx - we've replaced the ignition coil (dual output), wires, caps, and plugs, so I can't see any reason for ignition malfunction - unless it is spark plug gap or some other strange...
