Yeah, that's what I thought too, but ended up with the safety relay. It was under the left side cover for some reason. Pulled it out at 1 am last night and ran through the tests in my book and everything looks fine. I cleaned the points and am going to set the points gap and crank up the...
Got it started again and checked the voltages. About 12.9-12.95 at idle and 13.3 v was the highest reading I got when reving it up. My book says it should be 14.5-15 v when at 2500 rpm, so I thought I'd test the voltage regulator. However my regulator seems to be different from the ones in my...
One of the coils was shorted out and was replaced with one from a parts bike. They were both tested at that time and had a resistance of about 5.3. I thought these coils were supposed to read about 4 ohms, so I thought they might be getting weak. Also have read accounts on this site where the...
PROGRESS! Charged up the battery and it started and ran today. I was able to take it up and down the road a few times. Dang this bike is fun! Parked it and came back about 30 minutes later and went to start it and after cranking a bit it started and ran for about 5 seconds and died. Then I...
Still having trouble. I am trying to set the static timing on the points and I can't seem to adjust it enough to get the mark on the rotor to line up with the F mark on the stator. The closest I have been able to get it is having the light come on when the mark is half way between the F and...
HAA! Progress! My book said something about taking a business card and running it between the points until it came out clean. I did that (with a doubled over index card) and now the light goes off and on. Seems it was just too dirty to make contact?
Yeah, I have trouble telling where the cam apex it just looking at it, but watching the points open then using a feeler gauge to find the point of widest gap seems like it should work.
Yes. I watched the points open as I turned the engine over with a wrench, then used a feeler gauge to help me find the spot where is was the widest open. Then used a 0.012 feeler gauge to set the points, but they still aren't quite closing...I guess. I mean it looks like they close but the...
Hmmm, still having trouble with the points. I purchased a new set of feeler gauges that had a 0.012 blade and cleaned off the oil with brake clean and paper towels, then set the points again with the smaller gauge and leaving them tighter this time. Went to time them and the points (at least...
When poking around under the right side cover trying to figure out where the safety switch was, I found out the blue and white wire had a very loose bullet connector (it came apart when I poked it). Put that back together and now it seems to work at least part of the time.
Yeah, the light goes out. Sounds like I need to go back and regap the points. The only feeler gauge I had in the range my book specified (0.012-0.016) was a 0.015 and I was wary of making them too tight and opening them against the spring pressure when setting them...so I probably set them too...
