Helmets, I didn't know that!

I’ve been wearing HJC modular helmets for years now, I’m on my third one. They just fit me well, it makes it easy to deal with wearing eye glasses and I like that it has an inner tinted sun visor that allows me to leave my sunglasses at home. The latch assembly is all metal ( not all Modular’s are ) which enhances the safety. Here in Arizona the sun can be so intensely bright that I also wear an optional dark smoke tinted outer visor, you might think that looking through two tinted visors would be too dark but no sir! 🌞Not here.

Which model HJC is that Bob?

Every crash is different. Most importantly, don’t drink and ride. Ride defensively. Most motorcycle crashes can be avoided. That school bus coming toward you is going to turn across your path. Be prepared for it.
A helmet is a pretty good idea.

FWIW, I believe the greatest portion of helmetless fatalities also involve alcohol and or other risky behavior.
Agreed. One of the two crashes I had when I was young and stupid was because I was drinking. I was about 20 and we had been at a Loretta Lynn/Conway Twitty concert all afternoon. Things happen pretty darn fast on a bike and when your judgement is impaired...
My otherwise new Honda Shadow didn't look quite as nice after that.

I was finally able to order a set of smaller cheek pads for my HJC because seeing this post reminded me. I checked and they were available. Every time I looked over the last year they were always on BO.

Thanks for the video links. was interested in Arai but am steering away from them for two reasons: no built in sun visor and they don’t offer Modular. I watched this video the other day and was impressed by the company. Unfortunately they don’t make what I’d like to have and if I’m going to spend $1000+, I’d like to get the features I was looking for. Still lots of options out there. I’m going to try a few on over the next couple of weeks.

Arai does not build a modular helmet or offer a sun visor because they compromise safety. Arai won't make that compromise. Arai is far and away the most comfortable helmet I've ever had on my head. My last one was also extremely well ventilated.

I've never had a modular helmet. I have been known to wear a half or 3/4 helmet. I'd enjoy riding no helmet, but that's not a risk I'm willing to take. My current helmet has a drop-down visor. I'll take that risk.

I had a HJC SYMax 2 modular helmet for 9 yrs...back in 2017 I was wearing when I t-boned a lady that pulled out in front of me..I was riding my beautiful 1979XS1100...luckily the bike impacted her jeep and not me..I flew 50ft. and landed on the back of my head/neck/shoulders...my 9 yr old HJC saved my bacon big time...it was toasted of course...

That looks like another landing I wouldn’t have wanted to make without a helmet.

I had a mild concusion and awful vertigo for several days afterwards...don't want to imagine how much worse it could have been..I almost went out the door with a half helmet..and decided at the last minute to wear the HJC...

Back in the mid 70’s , I took a trip over the handlebars (after hitting a dog of all things) ! Those were the days of just wearing jeans and t-shirts, not even any gloves. My shoe was torn off by the handlebars and I slid on the asphalt and lost a lot of skin. It wasn’t until a couple days later , when I looked at my helmet, that I realized I had ground a flat spot on it just above my forehead. I was wearing an old Bell Star full face helmet from my old dirt bike riding days. The only piece of protective gear I had on.……and I never even felt my head hit the ground. I only wish I had been wearing a jacket that day! 😲

Dogginit, conversation about riding equipment do usually get many varied responses. Why?
Because riders have many different choices.
Selecting the proper gear for yourself greatly depends on where you ride, weather conditions, how far you ride, how fast you ride, season of the year 🐝
All choices can be appropriate!
Because at this stage in my riding life, (very little) I ride only for a short local burst of excitement and pleasure. Only when conditions are right for that enjoyment. So I choose common safety gear and that includes a good fitting safe open face helmet that is also fun to wear
😎
People do smile or thumb up 👍 me sometimes.
*and check out those recently found evening riding self lighting glasses which may just be bright enough to help see out of the tinted face shield
🤣 -R
Thats a nice lid / Similar to a UK Davida product.
I have been trying to find a Davida helmet with the Stars & Stripes motif for ages.

I went to buy a new lid today. Target helmets were the Schuberth C5 and Shoei Neotec 2, both Modular helmets. I thought I’d need an XL but tried both Large and XL. With the Schuberth, the L was too tight and made my head hurt within a minute. The XL was so loose you could probably spin it on my head. The XL Shoei seemed to fit well, but my luck, in that size there were no colours that I wanted (I think they only had black and a couple of other funky designs). They did have a high gloss black with a high viz stripe on it. My sales guy warned me it would most likely fade in a year and that wasn’t covered under warranty. That turned me away from that helmet. The Neotec 2 is now obsolete and it’s superseded by the Neotec 3, that won’t be available until the springtime. I guess I’ll wait.

The comment that high viz fades intrigued me so when I got home I read quite a few posts on different forums where riders complained of fading of helmets and clothing in less than a season.

The fading helmet:

That should be an excellent helmet. Regarding high viz fade, I don’t know what there is about high viz yellow, but I bought a riding jacket once in that color. ( I was commuting daily in dense city traffic ) and it did the same thing, big time fade the first year I owned it.
