have you ever come off your XS ?

Twice. Once when a car turned in front of me and I hit them in the front fender and went over the hood. Broke my wrist and collarbone. The second time I was out in Montana driving at night and hit a muffler lying in the road at 65mph. The bike went up, my ass and feet went even higher but I...

    Zinc Electroplating

No, as the fuel and zinc are not compatible long term. I looked into this years ago when I was building a fuel tank for a boat. It just isn't done.

    Polishing question with pictures

I wet sand with 220, 400, 600, then 800. Polish with emory, tripoli (brown), then white. I found that when the oxidation gets this bad some of the pits require too much effort to get out so I just live with it. You can't see them from 2 feet away. think I will try those nylon wheels next time.

    Barn find CB650

It looks like it should clean up nice. I found a 76 CB750F like that except for all the dust. 25 year storage 6700 miles. Nice to find real survivors in such good shape. Thank goodness for the Great White North.:D

yeah....re-spoking and truing was the easy part. The little bit of detailing on the visible frame welds really makes the paint job look better.

If you want some good info on the good and bad of that bike check out the SOHC4 forum. Some consider it the bastard stepchild of the SOHC4 CB world. My neighbor has one and I have spent some time helping him with it. The carbs on the first couple of years are easier to deal with than the...

Having the second caliper and disc got me to thinking.....I drilled both discs and disassembled and cleaned the 2nd caliper. I am not completely sold on this yet....more weight but better braking....more expense. I will need a rebuild kit, at least one new piston, additional brake line, and...

I was looking for a few small parts on the local CL ....seat latch and lock to replace the broken one on my bike. Got that but this stuff came with it plus a caliper and rotor, ignition, and indicator pod all from a 76. He wasn't getting much response to his ad and wanted it to go to a good...

The rear alloy rim was in tough shape the front not nearly as bad. After sanding with 220, 400, 600, 800 and polishing I put new spokes in both. Made this fancy device to true the rims. The wood dowels would squeal when in light contact with the aluminum so the objective was to get a nice...

Slacked off some more and winter arrived and it got too cold to spray paint so I got some Por 15 Hardnose and brushed it on. I put a heater out in the porch and also left a window open. This stuff is a two part paint and even brushing the fumes were a bit nasty. I did use a respirator too...

I did not mention it but I added a grease fitting in the middle of the swing arm making sure it did not conflict with the pivot tube. Also changed the end zerks to ones that fit my grease gun.

    long trips on your xs's

I stayed off the interstate highways as much as possible. Two lane highway 12 is one of my favorites. It goes by my house a few blocks away and I can take it all the way from Minneapolis to the Pacific Ocean. Done that.:bike:

Stock gearing I am sure I never spent much time above 70 usually 60-70. I do remember crossing Nevada at 70 most of way, throttle locked down, leaning back on my pack, and no hands on the bars.:bike:

The second photo in my post is on top of the Beartooth Pass at nearly 11,000 feet. You should have no problem.

Quite well overall. I thought they made great touring bikes back in the day. Properly set up the isolastic suspension makes them smooth for a twin. The only problem I recall is on one trip Paul had problems with the head on his bike. We made it to Billings MT to a friends. Another friend...

    long trips on your xs's

In 1982 I did a 6000 mile solo trip. Minneapolis to Sturgis to the bike rally where I bought a pair of cowboy boots:D for the ride. From there on to Yellowstone. Met a guy here from South Africa touring the US and rode with him through Idaho and Nevada to Lake Tahoe where we went different...

So the project stalled out for a year will I was busy with other stuff though I did small things like rebuild the carbs. I finally got the bike home putting the forks back on and using a spare front wheel as I had already taken the tire off the rim. Took the engine out and dismantled the bike...
