Virago was the first bike I rebuilt and chopped up. Once I fixed the starter it was a fun ride. The starter issues were specifically bad '81-'83. Pull the oil nut you should see all the metal shavings from the starter gears on the magnet.

2 is ok i used in line resistors similar to these or as Grinder mentioned, using a led flasher relay. I guess whatever you have readily available.

Standard flashers will work but you need to add resistors.

If that's the case, does that explain the 5 seconds of smoke I get during startup. Burning excess gas?

my bike leans quite a bit on the kickstand. when leaned over and running is it possible for it to lean over so much that fuel will come out of the "overflow" on the carb?
