    Piston ring compressors

For those that have installed cylinders, what is your preferred tool to compress the rings? If you have references for where to purchase the tool you use it would be appreciated. Thanks, Robert

    Cylinder base gasket

Ok, another question for the all knowing XS650 database. I have a cylinder block that has been modified with larger sleeves for 80mm pistons and I'm trying to fit the base gasket but something doesn't seem right. Is there supposed to be an o ring around the sleeve like in the picture? I'm...

    Cam chain dampner

Does anyone know how to seal these fasteners? Do they both use a copper washer where the arrows are? My Clymer manual says nothing about sealing these and I can't believe there isn't something that goes in place here to make a seal. O-rings don't seam likely and using silicone on the threads...

    Clutch conversion

Hello all knowing XS650 owners, I'm building a new engine for flat track racing and the engine I'm using is from an '82 Special II. I've been told that If I'm going to be running any kind of decent horsepower I should convert my 6 disc clutch to a 7 disc. So now I'm working with Michael Morse...

    Cam chain replacement

I'm ready to put a set of cases together and I have a new cam chain to install. The new chain is endless and came with a master link. Therefore I must break the new chain and install the master link in order to install the chain in the engine. All because of that stinking "Cam Chain Tensioner...

    engine case stud torquing

Hello all, A while ago I spotted a nice diagram on this forum that showed the torquing sequence for case studs and bolts. The person that made the diagram highlighted all the numbers in the torquing sequence so one didn't have to rely on the hard to read cast in numbers on the case halves...

    engine case stud removal

Anyone ever try to remove one of these case studs? The one closest to the camera in the pic has boogered threads (although they still work) and since this will be a racing engine I just wanted to be cautious and thorough and replace it. I have a stud removal tool but it won't work on a stud...

    tranny circlip

Hello all, I'm reassembling an engine and I noticed that the output tranny shaft (assembly) has a large circlip on the bearing just behind the primary sprocket. As you'll notice in the pics the circlip only goes around half of the bearing. The pics in my Clymer manual show the same thing...

    Anyone ever see this before?

What am I going to do? The first inclination is to use an easy out but I'm sure these pins are hardened and pressed in. Not like removing a broken screw. Now here's a dumb question, is it possible to run without these? Seems like its what keeps the crank bearing from spinning in the cases...

    Help removing generator rotor?

Hello all you XS gurus. I have a 1982 Special II and I'm trying to remove the generator rotor. This is my first time doing this on an XS so I'm starting from scratch. My Clymer manual says "use a Yamaha rotor removal tool" for this job. Can it be done without one of these? I'm also assuming...

    Flattrack racer build

Since I put up my first post on choosing ignition systems for a flattrack racer build a few weeks ago I figure I might as well start a thread on this build. My name is Robert and I live in Central Valley CA and have been racing bikes for about 20 years, mostly flattrack. I have only ridden...

    Racing ignition

Any racers out there? I am starting a build on a xs650 based engine that will be used exclusively for flat track racing. I'm experienced at engine building/tuning but this is my first xs650. I have been doing a lot of research but I've been coming up a little short on which ignition...
