Mixing 78 top end with 82 bottom end

Purchased a '78 xs650 with a bad bottom end. was given a '82 donor motor with a bad top end. I mated the good '78 top end with the '82 bottom end and did a back yard rebuild. After running the half assed rebuild for a couple weeks I decided to bite the bullet and take it in to get rebuilt...

    Charging system help needed!

Thanks for the tips! I was able to figure it out. John, you were right about not needing the nylon screws. In one of my previous pictures I posted on a different thread you can see one of the brush springs sticking out. I pulled the brushes out and found that only one was making contact. I...

    Charging system help needed!

I got it given to me, it's black and doesn't have anything written on it, i don't think it's the one from mikes xs. Although it does look similar... I guess I'm going to try the nylon screw install and see if that makes my charging system work. Any idea where you buy 4mm nylon screws? online...

    Charging system help needed!

I've got a 1978 xs bobber, simplified wiring with a newer regulator/rectifier and boyer ignition. No "nylon" screws in the stator that i keep hearing about to "unground" the stator (I still don't understand the reasoning behind this) Anyways, got the bike all together took it for a ride and...

    Clutch rod seal

It's a bitch to get in, the best way to replace it is when you split the case but obviously not everyone's going to be doing that. I found a heavier grease like bearing grease works good after you chamfer the edges with a knife and ensure there is no sharp edges. I pushed in the bottom first...

    Ticking noise! Any ideas?

Hey everyone, got some great advice here last time so I'm hoping for some more this time! I did a rebuild on my 1978 xs650 bobber, stripped the motor right apart, put it back together and I have a ticking coming from my top end. I'm running pod filters, boyer ignition, simplified wiring. It...

Need help with my Boyer?...I think

Yayyy!! Got it running this morning! You were right with the yellow mark on the timing, I was way off. Thanks a bunch, now I just have to fine tune it, get the mixture screws set and jet it properly since I'm running straight pipes. Cheers!

Need help with my Boyer?...I think

Thanks for all the great advice! I also have another important piece of info, the bottom end is off another bike, so that would explain why its not jiving with my top end. Ill try setting my timing to the yellow mark and see if that works. As for the nylon screws anyone know if I need them...

Need help with my Boyer?...I think

Before I bobbed it the bike ran but it had a bent crank, so I put in a different bottom end. So maybe I have to change something in my bottom end to make it jive with the original boyer in the top end? The timing has been messed with since the whole motor has be completely taken apart. I...

Need help with my Boyer?...I think

I have a 1978 xs650 that I have turned into a bobber. The motor ran before the deconstruction and had a Boyer ignition installed along with all the original condensors, regulators, etc.. I have now added the modern regulator/rectifier, and I'm trying to set the timing on it but I'm not sure...
