And for my next trick ....

Thanks, 5T. I figured 1st retorque after 3 heat cycles and check valve clearances & camchain tension then too. Repeat after around 50 miles, again after 100 more, repeat until oil & filter change at 500 or so. And all the checks again. And so on .... I have a hefty investment in this motor...

And for my next trick ....

And work it did. A bit fiddly but eminently doable. The barrels were a pretty tight fit when I dropped them on, so I cut a few bits of 15mm water pipe and just snugged everything down to make sure the base gasket is seated properly. No head gasket. When I get the cam, I think I'll do this...

And for my next trick ....

Thanks Jim, that was what I meant and I did have a brief go with no result but I'll try again tomorrow. Bit pissed off with it at the moment!

    XS650 Top End Buildup

Gary means two wrenches (spanners, for us UK folk) one on each of the union and the oil tube nut. Hold one so it doesn't turn while tightening the other, like you would with a locknut.

And for my next trick ....

Hi Raymond, perhps these pics illustrate the conundrum a bit better: I've been pretty careful all the way through and can't think of any time that the old or new camchain could have lost engagement with the crank sprocket. If I could make that happen now, I would!

And for my next trick ....

I have not been sitting on my hands, and have decided to go the whole hog, as it were. A retirement present to me!! This means 750 BBK (Wiseco pistons option) from Smedspeed, plus their forged valves, Colisbro guides, recut seats, beehive valve springs, a moderate porting job by me, Shell #1...

    XS650 Top End Buildup

Thanks chaps. I'll go for the lower end of the range and defo the double wrench as per Gary's comment.

    XS650 Top End Buildup

Hi all, there's a couple of torque settings I can't find anywhere in any Haynes or shop manual. Can anyone enlighten me as to the values for these, please? The bushings for the cam chain guide, technically called guide bar nuts (bottom arrow) have copper crush washers for oil sealing The...

    750 "big bore" kits

This is the exact combination I'm putting together right now. 750 kit with Wiseco pistons, ported (by me so nothing extreme!) head, Smedspeed valves & springs. Currently waiting for the cam to arrive. I'm aiming for a bit more at the bottom and middle. Currently agonising over what jetting I...

Very lovely! What speedo & tacho are used? That's what I'm looking for for my bike.

    Interesting motorcycles, not XS650

I had one of these for a couple of years. Defo a man's clutch even though it was hydraulic, but scary brakes I had to upgrade. And a terrible ignition system, that had to go too !

    XS650 Top End Buildup

Hi Steve, Yambits sell both. The DID link has solid pins and the Morse one hollow. They are out of stock of the Morse chain right now though. Can't speak for Heiden's stock but they are really good people and I've had lots of bit from them over the last few years. I'll be doing a top end...

    Let's See The XS's

Yesterday I had the pleasure of meeting @XsTony and his mate Mark for a chat and coffee in Devizes. Tony's rephased Ascot 840 is giving some vibration problems with the isolastic setup, which was really designed for a 360's vibes. Mark's bike is the lightweight 750, the other is of course...

How To: Remove the Camshaft Rocker Arms

Thanks, but for all four an M6 x 1 bolt doesn't even begin to start. I've been reluctant to apply any force as I really don't want to bugger things up. I have some M6 x 0.75 x 50mm bolts coming from China (naturally ...) and if they won't work either, then I'll do as you suggest and apply a...

How To: Remove the Camshaft Rocker Arms

Yes, the rocker arm shaft which we call the rocker spindle here in the UK. Guess I'll have to buy some M6 x 0.75 bolts and try my luck - the spindle end is so far recessed I can't get a thread gauge in there. Just as well I'm in no rush for this job!

How To: Remove the Camshaft Rocker Arms

Applying a good dose of heat then a firm tap with a dead-blow hammer worked for me. But now a different problem - what's the thread pitch for the rocker spindle? Everything I read says 'M6' but none of my 1mm pitch 'normal' M6 bolts will screw in. Did this change with late model ones? The...

And for my next trick ....

Thanks fellas. I just had another thought re paint removal - the guy I go to for powdercoating uses some chemical bath for paint removal - he can also put bigger things like bike frames in it and as his speciality is restoring mag wheels (he used to work for Dymag) he understands materials, so...

And for my next trick ....

Sorry if this rambles a but but I'm sat here in Covid's tight embrace and feel, quite frankly, shitty. So bear with ....... The next phase of my 'continual improvement' plan has begun! I decided that I'd like a modest uplift in ooomph in the 3k - 6k range (or 3-5 if I have to narrow it a...
