First bike 81 xs650 bobber. Flat power at high rpm

Alright guys got some good news, finally have it running about 95% smooth. I've been changing jet sizes, needle heights etc... this whole time on the weekends and after work. Finally some success with -45.0 pilot jets -stock Jet needles -142.5 main jet Idle mixture screws I think either 4 or...

First bike 81 xs650 bobber. Flat power at high rpm

Ooook, thank you guys, Jim, Gary. Just wasn't sure why everyone says it needs to be plugged, but rejetting/ needle heights will affect the pilot jets :umm: haha Just passed the slide drop test. I also read that a bit of nail polish will close those small tears, so I did two coats and did the...

First bike 81 xs650 bobber. Flat power at high rpm

This may be a dumb question but I can't find a direct answer on this anywhere. if the pilot jets are plugged which I've read over and over again, they have to be, does the size of the pilot jet affect anything above the plug ? What I'm asking is even though it's plugged with that rubber...

First bike 81 xs650 bobber. Flat power at high rpm

Alright checking in again after pushing her back down the street to my house a few times haha. I just took the carbs apart mostly to verify where certain jets are and give it another look over for imperfections. I've got 135 pilot air jets, was thinking of trying one bigger and one smaller...

First bike 81 xs650 bobber. Flat power at high rpm

Alright guys, battery charged, so far has been holding. Tested voltage of positive brush terminal, same as battery so no loss there. Cleaned up the rotor a bit (small amount of black dust) Started the bike at 11.6 volts, went for a 2 minute ride on my street and came home. Tested the battery...

First bike 81 xs650 bobber. Flat power at high rpm

Reading through the "charging system problems" all last night and this morning, learned how to do a slap test, so I do have the magnetic field in the rotor. Reading through the tech menu just kinda confused me because i was unable to identify parts just by reading about them. These two video...

I know :bike: can ya blame me though ? First bike, any time on that thing is the highlight of my day haha. I'll be back to diagnosing tomorrow. It did start every time when I first got it. Hopefully just need to charge the battery. Into the tech menu I go

First bike 81 xs650 bobber. Flat power at high rpm

Got the unipods on today, performance has certainly improved, high RPM is still a little flat towards the top but I'd say say it's reaching 85-95% of each gear now as opposed to what felt like 60-70% before. Obviously speculation without a tacometer. Had to jump it again today to get it going...

First bike 81 xs650 bobber. Flat power at high rpm

Alright, got the Unipods in the mail today. Should I install those and see what happens? If the stock ignition/ charging system is still in place and in working condition, but the problem persists, where to from there ? Also has anyone else rejetted only the main jets of the carburetor and had...

First bike 81 xs650 bobber. Flat power at high rpm

Ok, so what I've been reading is, if it runs, get a timing light to check timing ? Couldn't find anything else in tech section about checking timing. Also how to check TDC of piston to timing mark plate ? If there is any info in the tech section about how to do this (and what I'm even looking...

Don't have a manual, that tech menu is pretty awesome though I'll definitely learn a lot from that. Here's a few pictures of the bike, no fuse "box" more of a fuse and wire "hole" somewhat protected by metal plates. At work now. I'll check back in later!

First bike 81 xs650 bobber. Flat power at high rpm

Ok, I'm going to do the test on the rubber slide diaphragms from that carb guide tomorrow to see if those little abrasions are affecting anything. I can to that conclusion too, just cuz the PO said he knew what he was doing, doesn't mean he did it correctly. The only other things he changed were...

Damn man my bad, just made a profile here today, posted on a different thread before starting my own. Obviously learning quickly how things are run around here. Didn't mean to piss ya off!

First bike 81 xs650 bobber. Flat power at high rpm

Right on will do. I had the whole carb apart today for a little inspection after not seeing much difference with new jets. The rubber diaphragm on one carb did look a little worn out, cracked, dry, I'll add those to the order. This site is amazing I can't believe how many people are already...

http://www.xs650.com/threads/first-bike-81-xs650-bobber-flat-power-at-high-rpm.52958/#post-562935 thanks, I started a new thread here. Just ordered the unipod filters, hoping to see a change with that. I did have the carb off today cv34 on an 81 xs650 (idk if it's a special or not) and I...

Thanks everyone, unipods is what I'm hearing/ reading everywhere. Would you recommend the Canadian needle with the 3 settings instead of 1, even with unipods ?

Yup, haha my bad. I posted here before I decided to create the new one.

It's an 81 xs650. Not sure about the ignition, it's a kick start or push the button. Yeah I was just told to get rid of those cone shaped air pods and get the unipod air filters. Also just read that I should order the Canadian needle with the 3 different settings, as the one I have in it only...
