Just officially requested with Travis to aid in the permanent deletion of my account.
I have no wishes to further share pics, parts, tech support, etc and need to drop this online habit of reading unenjoyable threads.

That's too high rpm at 60 for my liking.
Or the Yamahas liking. I'd re-gear that back to stock 17 & 34 at least Pronto.
17 & 32 is what I've liked the most, but I ride faster than traffic speed on highways for both safety reasons and fun
Very good pics!
You have a daily rider there. And it's hot where you live? Everything, rods, cables, and choke plunger appear not only quite dry but surrounded with sandy like road grit.
Not surprised there are things sticking.
Do you have light oil? I wouldn't recommend WD40 as a lube that...
It's sold ofcourse.
Fun to look at. After high school I bought that very year / model. It was keyed by an angry girl friend so the price was low.
I painted that 78 Special that very color
Yamaha yellow ;)
Suppose since it was tried and proven, ETX14L for me again. No rubber liner then. They are wide and squeeze in. Short, so dense foam pad underneath and front and rear.
Fits 78/79 this way..
This one squeezed into the Special II battery tray tight.. 220 CCA

Marty probably knows what size actually fits a Standard Rubber battery liner?
I need to know which fits best as well as a Deka is definitely going into my 78E
Have you considered adding a rotor to the left side?
Instead of Bigger, Lighter 5mm twin rotors are an option as well.
There are matching calipers avaliable to find from other Yamaha models such as the bigger XS's or SR500..
Too hot for motorcycle play again over here in Eastern WA.. Swimming is the "thing to do"
The 78E is nearly complete and waiting for cooler fall weather for a start up test. No hurry.
Front brake calipers are not assembled, dry. Carbs are dry. Tank is clean and dry. Don't yet have a...
Using the 17fr & 32 rr sprocket combination on a Special, a 104 link chain should end up with the rear axle right in the middle of swingarm adjustment scale with proper chain tension set.
I suppose that is a good place to start and would not expect to run out of adjustment as the chain and...
I'll betcha the pilot circuit of a carb was partially blocked.
Continuing to ride it, think, and test it without a panic carbureator disassembly was smart. I've had a very similar experience with BS38's and continued to test jetting with lots of throttle. That time my hanging idle went away...
