The new life of a 72' XS II - Build thread

Had a workshop doublecheck measurements and the valve guides are good 👍 he ordered some new valves for me, the valve seats were also recut and the joint surface cut flat. The left side piston rings seems to also need replacing, which is a struggle as I have third oversize (0.75) which I can’t...

Ringsted motor has been my go-to for many parts, being the only shop here in Denmark that stocks xs parts and can ship from day to day. But like many others, I shop where i can get the parts the cheapest if there's no deadline. I always prefer to do the jobs myself on my bike, despite...

Following this method I measured 0.20-0.35 mm side-play all around, which further confirms that the valves are done for. Monday I’ll call a few shops to hear what they’ll charge to change valves and guides, before I start doing it myself. Good thing I’m not doing this as a business, there’s...

I tested the seal of the valves before removing collets, turned it upside down and poured in some liquid past the valves and let it sit, tried nocking around the block with the backside of a screwdriver to imitate vibrations and provoke a leak, but after two hours all the liquid was still there...

I was in a hurry so I only got to measure two valve seats, on the one with most and least wear on the valve stems - it seems like they were fine, measuring between 7.98 and 8.01. This would mean I should only replace valves? As the worst valves were .3 mm out of spec(measuring the width and not...

Here’s a video showing the play between valve and guide - the gap is actually visible

I’ve used a few different, they all have the spring and somewhat pop into place, some came with gaskets others bought separately, but they all start to leak after a while - why I’m suspecting that a bit of extra movement from the valve, caused by wear, could be the culprit.

I’ve had them come off a few times, if you look through this thread you’ll see that I have replaced the seals several times within the last couple of years, they come off after few hundred km. I might be installing them incorrectly, though it seems unlikely, or the out of spec valves could be...

Head’s off, quite a bit build up: there’s a little play between the valve and the valve guide, we’re looking at 7.75-7.91 when it should be 7.975+, but it seems excessive that there should come as much oil through here as exit the exhaust. I wonder if the rings could be worn already, they’ve...

And then a new sketch of how the bike actually ended up looking, I probably won’t use ai on this one though. Alabu being the original Viking name for the city I currently live in, Aalborg.

Not stupid at all, the sketch is obviously just pen and paper, but the platform accepts most inputs, I just took a picture with my phone and used the website Vizcom. The platform is free, you just need to upload a picture and write a prompt of what you want it to generate, for example a simple...

I’ve been riding every now and then, a few weeks ago I rode the bike out to the woods to collect mushrooms 🍄, which proved unsuccessful but I had a blast riding though: Forrest ride

I did the quick change without removing the head, making the small tool: First I changed the right side which was worst (according to the oil in the right exhaust). I couldn’t find a m8 bolt with 1 mm thread, so I did it with an m6 and a nut - definitely more of a struggle, but I managed...

I’ve been waiting in fear for the day someone might mention this 🥶 You are probably right, I’ll have to borrow a gauge and check, though I might just change the valve seals for now and ride the year out without a smoke machine between my legs and then pull the head when winter comes.

Valve stem seals: replacement without pulling the motor

How are you finding the seals after having ridden them for a while, any leaks? I need to replace mine yet again, I seem to wear them out fairly quickly - I have tried a few different of the standard ones, but I might have gotten unlucky with some old ones, as I had some crack within a year and...

The bike is back on the road 💃 or was.. I assembled the gearbox again and adjusted all the classic stuff, and rode it a few hundred km, noticing the beginning of smoke from the exhaust and the carbs still not being completely dialed in. time to get the carbs dialed in ✨ I changed the 45 pilot...

Why is it always the smallest things that make the biggest headaches.. a stripped bolt was the simple answer to why I couldn’t shift gears: The 2nd gear shift fork was quite worn, so I don’t mind having to change that for the new one, as that was starting to show. The new shift fork pins...

Finally getting the time to disassemble the bike to fix the gearbox, plus became a member of one more garage community. Tonights progress; remove a bunch of stuff and then the engine. I received (assumed broken parts) a new 2nd gear shift fork and the shift fork pins from the newer model...

The 125 main seems good, might go one more down, the 47,5 was too large though so went back to 45. The ride through Sweden went really great the first few days. The bike handled both single track, Forrest paths and gravel roads like a bliss, though it did get stuck in some mud once, it’s...
