What have you done to your XS today?

Winter hit the Seattle area last evening, so no pictures until I can get them outside. Yeah, I know, it's almost spring. Our four seasons consist of: Rainy Season Winter (6 to 8 days, usually in January but sometimes February) The Other Rainy Season Summer (July 5th to Sept 12). In the...

What have you done to your XS today?

Just finished up with the XS650E, tightening the last bolt (fuel tank bolt) and connecting the fuel lines. All I need to do is top off the oil It snowed last night so I doubt it will leave the barn today, but will as soon as it can. I picked this bike up last summer and have been tinkering...

    Turn signal relay...

I think there is some Japanese Magic in that flasher can. :-) Thanks again for the insight and above all, the schematic. Makes one wonder what else is wrong with the wiring diagrams.

    Turn signal relay...

Thanks, Gary. I get all that part, as it can be deduced from the wire diagram. What mystifies me is that putting a ground on the Y/G wire activates the flasher, and removing it stops it? If that's so, why does the flasher still work when the cancelling unit is completely disconnected? I'm...

    Turn signal relay...

Thanks, gggGary. The circuit diagram agrees with what I am seeing on my bike. Why all the manuals are different, beats the hell out of me. I used to have a Real Yamaha Shop Manual which probably explains why I didn't run into this before. OK, now I know where the wires go to and what's...

    Turn signal relay...

OK, race fans. I am stumped. Here's the deal: Every wiring diagram I can find on the XS650E, including my Clymer manual, says the turn signal flasher is connected to a Yellow/Green (Y/G) wire, a Brown/White (Br/W) and a Black (B) wire. The diagrams all say the black wire goes to the wire...

    Turn signal relay...

I found this thread while searching as I am having the exact same problem as the one that started it all: works fine with engine off or with engine idling, erratic at speed. I'm going to chase the ground issue first, as I found the black lead from the turn signal relay is NOT grounded...

    Advice Needed - Maybe dynamite?

Thanks! This looks worth having made up (or trying it myself, as now that I am retired I am thinking of getting my feeble arse to the local community college to take a welding course).

    Advice Needed - Maybe dynamite?

Coincidently, the old radio I keep in my shop, tuned to the local oldies Classic Rock station, played "Fire!" by The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown while I was heating the cover. I think the same spirits that hide my 12 mm sockets and my ratchets did that.

    Advice Needed - Maybe dynamite?

Yes, you were correct, but i did not read ALL of your post I have since then edited it. You must have viewed my posting before I edited it. Thanks again.

    Advice Needed - Maybe dynamite?

Bingo!!! The heat did it. No drama, no noise. I applied heat, used a small Phillips for leverage and found it was already loose. Thanks to everyone who responded. I was pleasantly surprised to find the evidence of gasket sealer was indeed there, but in a very minimal way. Must have been...

    Advice Needed - Maybe dynamite?

Thanks for the suggestions. I had actually thought of the special tool you mentioned. I have some steel bar stock lying around, along with a couple of people nearby running their own welding shop that take walk-in stuff like this. However, I have not tried the penetrating oil yet (I did think...

    Advice Needed - Maybe dynamite?

Thanks for the reply. This is an edited response as I didn't carefully read your post. I had thought of drilling and tapping a new hole but did NOT think of simply tapping the existing holes. THANKS!!! That may trash the cover but they seem to be available locally at one of the three guys...

    Advice Needed - Maybe dynamite?

I am returning a much-used XS-E to reliable running condition. A previous owner (or more accurately, "abuser") must have used some sort of goop/glue/Marinetex/epoxy instead of a gasket for the small oil strainer cover (the little round one on the right side). On previous bikes, I would simply...
