    Purpose of float needle plunger?

I like this idea! You guys must be right--I don't know what else it could possible be for. Thank you!

    Purpose of float needle plunger?

Hi! Adjusting float height on my 1980 650 and I think you're supposed to measure float height from where the float tang touches--but doesn't compress--the little plunger on the float needle. This got me thinking, what is the purpose of this plunger? The internet and all my tech manuals seem to...

Runs great on one cylinder, surges on two

Valves are a little clickety clackety but they are properly adjusted. No top end work that I know of.

Runs great on one cylinder, surges on two

I replaced everything multiple times except the butterfly seals. Will try that next. It stops surging as long as the idle (when warmed up) is around 900. And as long as the idle is this low it'll also rev down from higher rpms, albeit slowly. Gotta keep a hand on the throttle at stoplights...

Runs great on one cylinder, surges on two

I built and hooked up the manometer yesterday and carbs were nicely balanced. Next thought is that I might just have multiple air leaks. I feel like it's impossible on these old bikes to eliminate all leaks, but I'm getting revving when I spray carb cleaner on the carb boots, and when I spray it...

Runs great on one cylinder, surges on two

Each cylinder runs nicely and idles at the same rpm when run individually. Does that mean they are “synced” or not necessarily? The manual says never pull spark plug caps while running the engine or you can fry the coil…oops. Seems ok still.

Runs great on one cylinder, surges on two

Hi xs650 geniuses, 1980 xs650SG. It's been surging randomly and also won't come down from high rpms. Something interesting I've noticed is that when I pull either the left or the right sparkplug cap and make the bike run on only one cylinder it will idle nicely without surging, and as soon as...

    Headlamp stopped working

Hey all, thanks for the help! Problem fixed. The badly blown fuse/short circuit coincided with the non-functioning headlamp, but was not the cause of it. Turns out one of my alternator brushes had come loose and the lamp was not receiving power from the alternator/stator. Secured the brush and...

    Headlamp stopped working

Awesome, thanks! I'll check those wires and lights later today and post findings.

    Headlamp stopped working

No light when the bike is running. All other electrical items working--starter, turn signals, brake lights, etc. Grommets are good. Headlight works when rigged directly to battery. I'll check the safety relay and RLU. Can't see any burnt wires, but will keep looking. How do I ensure the safety...

    Headlamp stopped working

Hi! 1980 XS650SG. The headlamp has been working fine. Then the other day I unhooked the bulb from the 3-prong connector to do some other work behind the light. Forgot to turn off ignition switch, and somehow blew the headlamp fuse. The fuse REALLY blew. Like, all black and smoky. Put in a new...
