Okay, so the parts arrived yesterday. Which weight oli should I use? And I suppose brake fluid is standard?

Yes, you did! I was just reluctant to try it again, 'cause I tried moving the screw on both caliper sets on my first day of this and they wouldn't budge. I was afraid of stripping them. Thanks, dudeski!

Yo, yo..... Yo. I'm not sure where to reply on this thread. I hope I'm Still in the right spot! I removed the brakes! I took off the entire front bracket 'cause it was easy. And then the calipers came off! I could then see that the screw 5twins mentioned did indeed hold the calipers in place...

I believe you, I'm a babe in the hoods. Thing is, I've watched a few videos of guys removing the calipers from their Yamaha 650xs, but different model years, and they removed two bolts per caliper pair and the danged things slid right off the rotors.

Thanks, but that top nut is not connected to the calipers. There is actually another nut below it. The calipers are attached to this. In any regard, the same component on the rear wheel is much larger and I think would entail me taking the entire wheel off to get this loose. ... and it would...

But that's just it, 5twins. I can't get the caliper bracket to budge.

Hi. As you can see, there are two bolts on each caliper. One is for the brake line fluid. Regardless, I bled the lines and removed both, but the calipers will not budge. You may notice a port on the top of each caliper, which flips open, but I can't suss out why they're there.

Thanks for the link and advice! There is only one mounting bolt, right? I read on another thread here about a #5 five screw. I noticed on the back of the calipers there is a screw in the center, but each is difficult to get to and they look like they're dedicated to the calipers themselves and...

Well, a manual or the right YouTube video. I got it! Thanks, jetmechmarty, Mikey and nj 1639 for the comic relief. (Mikey, do you think you own half of this town?) That video helped me to locate the main filter, too, 'cause I was definitely unscrewing the wrong bolts in the wrong spot! Figure...

Hi. Where are the filters located? I looked all over my bike and best I can figure is they are on the underside, near the drain plugs. Am I right?

    Oil Filters

Yo, yo, yo! I have a 79 XS650. I need to do an oil change. I see on the forum that there is a sump filter as well. Would you please tell this steel-horse-riding-babe-in-the-woods what a sump filter is? And where do I find the filters on my bike and tell me whatever else I need to buy. Also -...

    82 Xs650 Special Float height? Info :)

Grimly, I don't know what an over - run is, or what popping and banging are. I haven't worked on the points or timing yet. This is all on-the-job training for me. :):sneaky:

And for all those who talked me through rebuilding my carbs last year: that worked too! This was the first high-speed ride I took since those repairs, and I am pleased to report that all is very well. Tomorrow I'm going to look into getting two new tires. Yahoooo! Thanks, everyone!!

It runs! And I took it for a spin. Thank you all for all your help!! Now the issue is constant backfiring - which it was doing when I first bought it last summer. I addressed that with additives and fresh gas. Right now the gas is half fresh and half old. Also, the guy who sold it to me used...

Hee, no boom. It's one third petroleum. So... No timing light, then? Pardon my ignorance, but how do I verify ignition timing?

    82 Xs650 Special Float height? Info :)

I bought a timing light last September but haven't used it yet. I've never used one. And I should correct myself; I didn't dribble fuel in the plug holes. I sprayed WD 40 in there because a mechanic friend recommended it to me. It worked every time I used it last year.
