Engine Noise (Not Relative to RPM)

I have not looked under the timing covers. I will do it straight away. Is there a place to get a look at the cam chain to see what's going on with it? I know I could take out the entire tensioner assembly and perhaps see something...

Engine Noise (Not Relative to RPM)

xjwmx/Goldy -- I had only cranked it over using the e-start and didn't hear anything over it's noise. I turned it by hand and voila! it sounds like a ratchet! i'm not sure if this is normal or if it hurts the motor to turn it this way... here is a link to the sound by hand...

Engine Noise (Not Relative to RPM)

Here's another video of it running i took. http://vimeo.com/20055204 Listen to it right before and when the engine dies. It sounds like something is kicking out or disengaging when the motor dies. I have taken both side covers off and am studying the clutch basket ass'y in preparation for...

Engine Noise (Not Relative to RPM)

I had a look-see under the RH side and found nothing so far... I removed the kickstart assy and it is working as it should. I am going to look under the clutch assy tomorrow. I am learning as I go! Thanks!

Engine Noise (Not Relative to RPM)

Thanks to all who've given their input. I have one last question. I was reading inxs' kickstart post here http://www.xs650.com/forum/showthread.php?t=772 and saw the quote: "Common problems - there are several common problems experienced with the kickstart, all manifest themselves with a...

Engine Noise (Not Relative to RPM)

5twins - The washer was on there. The cam chain tensioner appeared to be at the correct setting. Just to see if it made a difference, I tightened it down until it stuck out a ways and cranked it and it still made the same noise... Goldy - That sounds interesting. I wonder if there is a way...

Overdrive 5th (MikesXS) on 1975 Transmission w/ newer insides

MikeXS clearly states that his 5th gear overdrive "XS650's 1978 - 1984 Only! Note: Yamaha changed the shape of transmission gear teeth from 78 on and this is indicated by lines cut into the crest of each tooth." My question is: can I swap out the transmission from a later model and get the...

Engine Noise (Not Relative to RPM)

I removed, inspected and adjusted my cam chain tensioner today and the noise is still present... One thing that I did notice, is that it sounds kind of like the starter is failing to disengage when the motor dies (even when the bike is kick started). Any ideas about that? Thanks, David

Engine Noise (Not Relative to RPM)

Hello. My name is David (and I am new to the board. I ride a 1975 XS650 and am trying to ID an engine noise before I start tearing the motor apart. I've searched the forums and didn't see this asked. Does the noise from the common starter gear problem change with engine RPM? My common sense...
