    PMA wattage help

Here’s the early update: I put a test meter on it (two different ones, actually, to be redundant). Set point seems to be sub 14.4 volts, occasionally touches 14.4 but but never above. Taped it to the tank and rode around. Seems to be holding around 14.2. Will report back!

    PMA wattage help

Thank you Jim. Given your note about repeatedly draining the battery, I’m starting to pivot my thinking here. Because it’s a seven amp hour battery and it probably doesn’t have the correct amperage and cold cranking amp‘s in order to run the electric starter, which I’m doing and I probably...

    PMA wattage help

Yes to be clear: I ran the regulator that shipped with the PMA, and it caused problems with the battery due to (what I believe to be) overcharging from high amperage. I bought the MOSFET because it’s rated to 500W, incorrectly thinking that it shunts off excess amperage. But I think the 500W...

    PMA wattage help

For sure! I bought the PMA from Mikes because Hugh’s Handbuilt has been out of stock forever. I bought the MOSFET from Revival for the same reason. XSCharge XS650 PMA | Permanent Magnet Alternator https://www.mikesxs.net/yamaha-xs650-xscharge-permanent-magnet-alternator-kit-pma-200-watt.html...

    PMA wattage help

It’s a 3-phase, it has 3 yellow wires from the stator to the MOSFET regulator. Sorry everyone, the other two post replies are over my head haha.

    PMA wattage help

I had a lithium battery burn up on this XS as well, a Shorai LFX19A4-BS12. The problem is that was before I put the MOSFET regulator in it, and I think the standard solid state regulator rectifier was set too high and I’ve heard lithium batteries don’t like too much voltage. What’s a Y phase...

    PMA wattage help

*exact* problem is this: I replaced the stock charging system with a 200W PMA (was a totally clapped out barn find bike for $700 and needed it, as the rotor did not pass charging system diagnostic test). I also built a small battery box to have a minimal look, it fits a generic 7ah AGM power...

    PMA wattage help

Gotcha, thanks. I’m not super knowledgeable about electrics generally, so I could be way off but here’s what I understand based on a thread in this forum, a comment from pamcopete specifically: “Add up the current that your electrical system uses. Subtract that from the max current from the...

    PMA wattage help

thanks for the reply. The headlight is just an H4 bulb that is pretty common, I have looked for other higher wattage options but haven’t found anything. The AGM battery I run seems to be destroyed by the charging system amperage, I’ve gone through a few of them now. The MOSFET handles the...

    PMA wattage help

Hey all. I'm running a 200W PMA with a MOSFET regulator in my 1975 XS. I can't run a small battery (7ah AGM) because the wattage output from the PMA is too high and I run minimal electrics (35W/55W headlight and LED tail light). I know I'm causing all my own problems here with the electrical...

    Low voltage problem '78 XS650

Hey @pamcopete . I'm resurrecting this thread. I ran this system with a capacitor setup for some years, but I've decided to go back to a battery. I totally forgot about this issue with the 200w stator and the battery size, and I toasted a 14ah Shorai lithium iron battery first, and then a 10ah...

    E-ignition diagnosis help needed

Hey all! I have a 1975 XS650, custom tracker sort of thing. After rebuilding the motor I installed the Pamco e-ignition and e-advance. I’m not a pro mechanic or electrician, but I’m good enough to follow directions and solder some good connections and install everything correctly. The...

    Dunlop K70's/K81's

Sheet metal, glass, and ice rinks, mostly. Okay real answer is asphalt of all texture. Standard city streets. I've lost the back tire in hot weather on dry pavement, I lost it in warm weather on damp pavement, cold weather on dry and damp pavement... the list goes on. Dampness obviously is a...

    Dunlop K70's/K81's

Hey all, wondering if you can help with this. I have a '75 XS650 that is built as a custom street tracker. I have K70s on spoked 19"/18" original wheels. I have traction loss issues with the K70--and I'm talking about frequent and multiple times. Fortunately I've been crashing dirtbikes since I...

    Low voltage problem '78 XS650

Thanks once again Pamcopete. I took your advice and grabbed two Sparx capacitors from Triumph Spares Scheme here in Portland, and wired them in parallel and pulled the battery from the equation. I ran it, and at idle it had around 12v at the posts on one of the capacitors at a time, and...

    Low voltage problem '78 XS650

Ah, I see. Again, appreciate the help here. Running a simple electrical system like mine, the resistor and diode would live where in the charging system? I'm essentially running this diagram, except with an electronic ignition (one of yours Pamco Pete, that I bought from a friend)...

    Low voltage problem '78 XS650

retiredgentleman, I hear you, the stock system on my bike was fried and I picked up the HHB PMA after reading lots of forums and hearing good things. Pamcopete, I don't know much about DC electrics (obviously), so I have one more question for you before I try a 20ah SLA: someone mentioned...
