Hello,
Last night I went for a ride and on my way home the cam chain tensioner fell out (didn’t realize until this morning when I found a pool of oil under the bike and the tensioner siting under the carb. I believe it happened in the last 30 min of my ride since I didn’t see any oil or...
Hey guys! I'm new to the forum and rebuilding a 1981 XS650 Heritage Special. I've been a forum reader for a few months now and finally decided to become an active member.
My engine has 29k miles, ran when I bought it, but has super low compression, so I decided to tear the whole top end down...
hey fam!
I’m posting a video of how my bike is currently running. I know these bike are notorious for being noisy but I feel like mine has gradually gotten louder over the last 500 miles I put down since buying the bike.
Like I mentioned, 1977 XS650D. Just adjusted cam chain tension flush...
I have parts from both a type C and a type D cam chain tensioner and am trying to make either a complete A or piece together an E type
So, what I am looking for is either the cap off of the C type, it looks like the po dropped this one at some point and it's all cracked
To put together a D...
I am a little confused, when the bike is running the pin moves just to the flush point of the shaft it slides in but when the bike is off and I spin it by hand it goes almost 1/16 past the end of the shaft... should I be adjusting that out then to make it flush from there?? Thank you all!
Hello everyone.
You have all been amazing at answering my newbie questions, so here I come again for more.
I have a pretty good oil leak coming from the cam chain tensioner. It looks like it's probably the gasket under under the 6 bolt cover. I'd love to replace this myself instead of paying...
Hi All,
I am having some issues with my Cam Chain adjustment. Have owned my 1978 xs650 for two weeks, has it checked up with a mechanic before I purchased it and he gave me the usual list of maintenance issues that need to be taken care of on an older bike, but the general ok.
Issue at...
Hi guys,
I suspect I know the answer but has anyone managed to change the cam chain tensioner & guide on a 1981 model without removing the engine from the frame.
Is is possible to remove the head, jack up the barrels and access the 4 retaining bolts on the tensioner bracket?
Can the barrels...
I have an oil leak - and a mechanic said it was by/inside (?) the cam chain tensioner.
I can see that it's leaking from beneath that acorn shown on the picture....
Do I need to get a new piece or what?
Thanks for any help!

SORRY: 1979 XS 650 Special
Hi,
I was adjusting the cam chain yesterday to get rid of a top end noise (which worked) and noticed that my tensioner had the lock nut on it. I have a 79 special and was under the impression that this was one of the yrs/models that have the tensioner version without the locknut. Am I wrong...
I installed the cam chain tensioner last night on my fresh rebuild and never saw any movement in the plunger rod so I removed it for further inspection. I noticed two washers, one small and one thicker with a shoulder, between the spring and threaded adjuster. These two washers are preventing...
Dear Sirs.
I have been an owner of an XS 650 E (standard) for 2 years now.
There is one thing that is puzzling me;
When I adjust the cam chain tensioner as said by owners manual and Clymer (pin should me flush with the nut) I have a lot of mecanical noise, assumingly coming from the cam...
- there are different types of cam chain tensioners...the early cam chains, XS1-TX, had 102 links, an 0.315in/8.0mm pitch, a 34T cam sprocket and were tensioned from the rear by a sprung wheel and guide...later models, TXA on, had 106 links, an 0.3061in/7.774mm pitch, a 36T sprocket and were...
